Help wanted to identify this timber (or similar)
Can anyone identify this timber (or suggest something similar). My wife wants a table with a similar finish.
FWIW it was in an Australian Coffee Shop.
Apologies for the quality it was a snap of a magazine picture taken on her cellphone

Hi
does SHMBO want a similar high gloss finish, or a table made from a similar pale coloured wood.
Possibilities for similar colour, sourced from the Australian Timber Buyers Guide -- highly recommended are:
Bolly Gum
Coachwood -- which is hard to come by
East Indian Kauri
Hoop Pine
Queensland Kauri pine
Camphor Laurel usually has a lot more brown in itregards from Alberta, Canada

The texture - not the gloss is what she likes.
I don't know if any of those are available in New Zealand although there are some( Hoop Pine) available as Ply veneers.
I think Camphor Laurel might do the trick. I'll see if there are supplies available. It would also be quite nice for a small camphor chest that I'd like to try as a box with the idea of making a larger one like a sea chest later on.

I should have checked where you were Gerryattrick
You should be able to get Kauri in NZ -- the colour and texture should be a reasonable matchregards from Alberta, Canada

I've seen some Tasmanian Myrtle that looks a lot like that. Probably quite rare in your country, and expensive in ours.....

I might be able to score some Kauri from a site in the news at the moment.
There is a guy sitting up a 500 year old Kauri stopping the developer felling it. We have Kauri die back here in NZ and folks are encouraged to do things like wash shoes if walking near Kauri to stop it spreading. This is a healthy tree and the local council have approved it being felled, along with a 300 year old Rimu, so the guy can build a couple of houses.
I am not that fanatical a greenie but I think this is one case where I am behind the protesters.

Unfortunately they don't sell timber - just the finished product but I may be able to get some contacts via them.
One place I aim to go to is here:

I believe they are not "cheap" but its all relative I guess. Thanks for the contact anyway as its not one I knew of.
