Default Help neded to do end bevel cut on 2300 X 450 Tas Oak TV Unit top

    Hi All,
I've got a commission to make a TV Unit 2,300 long and 450 wide, using 32mm solid timber. It stands 450 high (including a 75mm plinth.

The client wants the corner joints on the 2300 x 375 Unit to be bevel cut and grain matched.

I can manage bevels on the 375 long side pieces BUT I have no way of doing a 45 degree bevel on the 2300 x 450 wide tops and bottoms (the commission calls for two identical units)

I am in Montmorency in Victoria ... and can take the pieces to a workshop that has the capacity to do the cuts for me .... so if you can help me out (for a suitable fee if needs be) then please let me know

    Thanks so much

If you have no luck look into space tank in North Coburg they rent their workshop space and have a huge Italian sliding tablesaw that will do the job

Thanks for the heads up ..... I am not sure that $215 to do 8 cuts is going to be affordable within the project budget.

But I will keep it mind as an option

Do you have a saw bench? If so tilt the saw blade to 45 degree. If you don't have a saw bench then I would use the job as an excuse to get one (even though it may cost more than the job you require it for as one has to start to aquire tools somehow).
Failing that then by hand... carefully cut the mitres by hand with a hand/panel saw and dress/smooth the mitres with a hand plane until they fit.
Or use a large 45 degree router bit in a router taking small cuts.

$27 ($215/8) an accurate cut sounds like a bargain to me. You’ll be home by lunch with the cuts done and ready to go.

That's $215 for a month its like $95 plus GST for a day pass.

I use their services when ever I have stuff that is way to large for my setup. I use their massive bandsaw to rip logs into boards.

Another option could be a track saw like the Festool TS55 or similar. they tilt to 45. Easier to take the tool to the work with the large stuff.

    Hi Rod

I have a Harvey, it has a left tilting blade so I can use the RHS of the table to do bevel cuts to pieces around 700mm long.
I dont cut bevels on the LHS because then the offcut is on the top .... I prefer the offcut to be under the blade ....besides the sled wont handle a piece that long.

I used to work here: CONTACT – Dewhurst Furniture
They do contract machining and could probably help you out.

    Hi all,
With the new day comes the new ideas.... just trialled using the 12 inch Bosche Gliding CMS for the bevel cuts ... works OK.

It is a bit of a task to balance the pieces on the mitre saw stand so I have made some support tables. The maximum cut width is around 320mm so I have the flip the piece and change the bevel from LHS to RHS. I am getting close to matching the kerf line now ..... a tidyup with the No6 plane seems to give a pretty good result.

So now to order the 40 sticks of 2400 x 90 Tas Oak ... and 32 sticks of 110 x19, plus the 6mm marine ply for the backs and drawer bottoms ....

    Regards

    Rob

For a 45 degree bevel, I would just use a track saw. My Festool gear, with 1400 rails joined together should be able to manage your 2400mm cuts. You would just need to plan your cuts accordingly.

If the bevel was a different angle, then you might have different problems.

Sometimes you need to spend money to make money.

    Hi Jack,
I might mave not explained it clearly .. but the Bevels are on the width sides ... 450mm ....

I have a track saw but it is not too stable at 45 degrees due to the weight of the saw tipping the rails .. I guess I could screw the rails down but I wanted to cut from the top side.

ANyways a kind chap from Whittlesea has a slider that can do the cuts on now if needed.
