help with picture frame

I have been asked

to make some picture frames and bought the timber from Bunnings. Now on the very few attempts making a frame I have difficulty in nailing the miters. I have an electric stapler but I dont like the look ( staple from the back of course) The timber is 25mm wide so I suppose I could try and cut a groove inside the miter ( I think it is called feathering ) but there does not appear decent deep enough cut, I have the Triton compact saw so I can lower the blade. I also saw at the timber show a gadget that puts a small staple in the miter, googled it but the cheapest price was $88.00 plus ???? postage. Not really worth it at the moment untill maybe I get asked again

. Any good ideas to put them together so they stay fixed.

Hey John,

The best way to jion your frames is with the right gear, if you don't have any then you try a small biscuit in each corner, or a cut and a piece of vaneer from the outside of the Mitre, the best place to look is at a mob called Frameco, they have all the gear and they are in Vic.

went there, it is a very intersesting site and I will definately look closer to learn how to make the frames.

BUT I am back to square one with the price.

Hi John

Hazza's spot on. Frameco also regularly attend woodwork shows and also do demonstration nights. Its and hour well spent.

Frameco also run a guillotining service where they cut the mitres on your frames extremely accurately.

Also good art supplies stores will also carry a range of Frameco and their competitors gear.

Hey John,

I went down the road of getting cheap gear, waste of time and money, the best couple of hundred i spent was doing a framing course with Frameco, one day and you can do as good a job as any shop. There is a guy on E Bay calls himself DIY Framing, sells some reasonable stuff, beware!, once you get a few done it will snowball

John,
V-nails are the way to go. They are easily available at art shops and some hardware stores.
I insert them by using my drill press. I simply glued a small flat magnet to the head of a large bolt. Cost? About 20 cents. (Plus a drill press)
Put the bolt in the chuck of the drill. Put one V-nail on the magnet. Lined it up with the joint and pressed it in .Easy. I have used this method on all sorts of wood from pine to Jarrah. Just make sure you joint is held tight and secure while you put theV-nail in.

Michael and his crew are most helpful with selection if you take your picture or photo with you
