Default Help Please with changing round column to square

    Hi,

trying to make these old Pool area columns a bit more modern and want to box them in to become square, any suggestions on a wood product that would work for this?
much appreciated. I have attached a pic of column.

Not sure if its sacralidge to mention on this site, but for pure maintenance free you can look at the many types of composite boards to wrap around it.

The columns don't look to be a large diameter so almost anything will probably work. The two issues I see are

    1. Is it exposed to the elements? If so ( and it probably is exposed) you should choose something that will survive in the weather.
    2. How to deal with the braces (can you remove them temporarily?)

The easiest is just box them in with the appropriate width ( 110 or 138 x 19) primed LOSP pine and express the joint so any movement wont look unsightly
If you want to get a bit fancy I have done it with hardwood and mitred the corners and then cut a 3mm x 3mm rebate in the corners to hide any movement from weathering over time

The braces could be the complication in this job?

If they are merely decorative then you essentially have two choices:
    • Remove them permanently, or
    • Remove them and reistall on the new fairing.

But if they are structural then things get a bit more complicated. The braces will be transferring torque forces directly into the post, and it is unlikely that any fairing will be strong enough to accept those forces. The brace must remain attached to the original round post. This probably means that the brace will need to be faired into the fairing somehow - perhaps a rather difficult task?

Cut the boxing cladding in around the brace and then box the brace in in a similar manner
