Help PLS~Can anyone make a Slab Bench Seat in ADL?
Dear friends,
I am new, please dont slam me like you did to that poor person wanting a bed. I can very much appreciate the hard work that goes into these beautiful pieces of art.
That being said, Heres my Query:
I am in South Australia, i have spied a magnificent bench seat. Which i believe is made up of redgum slabs and some posts. Thing is, the originator is all the way up near newcastle'ish and with my time limit i think i am going to have to find someone a wee bit more "local"..
But apparently one cant come across a slab furniture maker in the yella pages in sa, hence my being here.. (does no-one advertise anymore?)
I shall try and attach a picture so people know what kind of chair im on about.
I am looking for something similar to this. It would be for grandpa's 90th.. which is infact in a few weeks..
So please, does anyone know of whom does these benches around town? i have found one fellow, but he's all the way in penola, (SE) if i can help it id like to get a bit closer as im in waikerie..
I will be looking for suitable immediate quotes also, as i would need to employ someone suitable asap! if i am going to pull this one off.
Whilst your chewing on the above please also, if anyone happens to know of a good pyrographer around, as grandpa is very into heratige we were thinking of perhaps having our family coat of arms burnt into the backrest.
It is a little detailed, though not too hard once the image is suitably transferred to the wood i imagine.
or possibly could some fella with one of those u beaut CNC machines make me a template and i could consider doing myself.. I will try and attach a sample of the COA also.
Your Super Prompt Responses would be more than appreciated, i have been googling and yella pagering for near two days... im going insane!!! and hopefully you'se will have the answers im looking for and i would have wished i came here first!
Ok, Thanks to all in advance whom reply.
Kind Regards
Robyn

Hi Foxy
As I did for pore Loni, here is a guestimate price. No freight or family crest just the bare bench approx 2 - 2.5m long recycled timber legs rather than the natural log ends, estapoled or something similar. Approx $1900.00 But I am in Newcastle too.
At least this will give you an idea on price. Good luck

Maybe $1700 - $1800 I usually work with 50 mm thick timber but this would only be 23 - 30 mm so a bit cheaper.

Try and google bush furniture or slab furniture and that should give you a start.
I have a "wattle" outdoor setting with the seats made and can put photos up later - when it gets light enough to take some -
The seats are 1.3 metres long and the table will be the same.

I also have plenty of Blackwood slabs that i can make a "one of" bench seat.
These are a sample of the slabs available

cheersregards

You might try ringing some of the market holders and see if they have any stallholders who do slabwork check out the Market and Fairs mag website here http://www.marketsandfairs.com.au/marketssa.html for phone numbers. Allso you might go and see the barman at the Waikerie hotel and see if he knows of any. Is there a chainsaw shop there? cant remember many years since I lived in Waikerie. If there is one, ask there. If you were in Qld I would love the job.

Finished Product~hit A Snag... More Help Please
Hello again!
As promised i will include some snaps of the finished product,
but you will notice witin the closeup of the acual seat he has filled in the gaps with some "stuff" that dosent even turn clear!!! (OMG)
I asked him why he not tint it black or something and he told me it would not bleed ino the little cracks..hmmm, im not sure what it is exactly but it does dip in some place below the surface where he has pushed it in so i am thinking i can top it up with some BLACK SOMETHING???? IDEAS PLEASE....
I am not a complete idiot when it comes to wood and crafts so what you suggest i will probably be able to make some sense of Thanks
ALSO
I have included my TRIAL burn of our ebert coat of arms, What you think?? pretty darned good if i do brag myself!! not as good a professional im sure but you pyrographers are rare over here!!!
I await your SPEEDY replies..
Thanks All.

If you can dig out the inidentified 'stuff' you could use some epoxy resin tinted with some polyesther black dye. You would need to get some from a fibreglass/resin supplier.
We do a lot of gum vein filling with both clear and tinted resin. Looks great, sands easily.

Robyn it looks like he's used Techniglue or similar epoxy in the cracks wich is not a great idea. It will be difficult bu not impossible to get enough out in order to be able to pour some black tinted resin in.
