Default Help - Purchasing Timber in Perth

    Hi Guys,

Emabarking on my first timber DIY job - installing sister joists to level out my floor (1900's timber/weatherboard cottage). The existing joists are 100 x 50 jarrah, however money is a major consideration so I will probably use treated pine of similar dimensions for the sisters.

Hoping some peoples with local experience could let me know a good place to get my timber. I don't really like Bunnings so was thinking about checking out Gunn's Timber in Welshpool.

Anyway have any suggestions - for appropriate cheap timber.

    Cheers,

    Craig

Was at guns just before christmas and believe me the don't do pine and they wont be as cheap as bunnings. I think they specialize in Oak and Jarrah only.

Sometimes we have to do things we don't like, for instance going to bunnings and buying at a cheaper rate, for a product that is overall the same, no matter where you go. Might be worth reconsidering your options, if not you could always look for a pine supply company.

    Or go recycled wood.

Craig, Gunns do have lots of jarrah, and it's probably cheaper than Bunnings, but I wouldn't be going that way myself. Let's face it: you are buying timber that is not going to be seen at all, so you are not looking for dressed stuff. The rough-sawn timber at Gunns is prime grade, and more expensive than the "select" stuff that is DAR.

I myself would be scrounging around at good salvage yards. Demolition timber is going to be fine for your purposes, and it will be far, far cheaper. Of course there might be some nails to pull and such, but even if you were to mess up a circular saw blade, the cost would be favourable compared to new timber.

The pine option is OK if you don't mind ripping great lengths of arsenic-treated pine.

A quick search in the Yellow Pages should point you at some demo/salvage places. Try there first....

Thanks for tjhe prompt responses Lads,

I had contemplated the salvage yards, however was nervous that these timbers may not be as flat (bowed etc) as I need for my joists.
Possibly apparent by the preceeding sentance I am a complete newbie and all this is foreign to me. Cape salvage isn't that far from me, so I might pop in there and see what thety have in stock and what the prices are like... Just googled the term D.A.R as stated in Michael's post - see learning as I go

Also to Michael and Harlan, thanks for saving me a drive to Gunns.

Any and all suggestions/tips, mosty welcomed.

some of the recycled stuff is bowed etc, but so is alot of the stuff at bunnings and other places. The 3 times i have bought timber from a salvage yard, i have sorted through the various piles and managed to find straight bits. Each time it saved me 100s of dollars in buying new.
