Unless you've got some holding devise, like some sort of vise, you'll need to look into that too as it'll be essential for keeping the peace between you, the scraper and the bat.

Spot on mate, A vice seems to be something I seem to be missing the most!

The batmakers suggest vice number 5 or number 5 vice.

They seem to be varying a lot in pricing.

    where to I buy one?

Well, I like Dawn: Vices, Clamps, Hand Tools, Destaco, Carver, Stainless Steel Vices and Clamps but between you and me, two sturdy, parallel bits of timber bolted to something that's not going anywhere and a long slender wedge would do the trick.

To create the Burr on the edge of a scraper;First you need to clean up the previous edge (or manufactured edge if first use). This needs to be filed off, a Mill File, Oilstone or Diamond hone is useful (not a waterstone, they are too soft for the hardness of the scraper). Flatten both flat sides and then the edge (scraping) face. Next, place scraper in a vise (it can be held but more difficult). Draw the burnisher (made as I described or bought or another tool shank) lengthways along the edge, from the centre to the corner (in both directions). It may take a couple of passes, you'll be able to feel the burr with your fingernail. Once created change the angle of the burnisher to give a 5 - 10 degree tilt and make one more pass.I'm sat at work (don't tell on me) writing this and so cannot see YouTube, but if you search there will be a video demonstrating the whole method.

...or a "shaving horse" thinking it could be adapted to a bat scraping horse:

Thanks everyone for all the info.

Ordered the scraper, waiting on it.

Does anyone know what size is this Grinder on the top right in this picture?
