help required re-arrenging shed
OK,
I'm in the process of re-arranging the shed, the area I have to work with is 6meters by 9 meters.
Two roller doors on the north face. I'd like to have access through these as much as possible.
The west face has some pallet racking which comes out about 1.5 meters. The East face has shelving which will be all the way along the wall which comes out about 300mm.
The south wall will have the SCMS station against it (currently sitting on old triton MK3 extension table)
below is a rough sketch off what I know will go where, I'm having trouble as to where to put the bandsaw and bench. I have thought about using the bench as an outfeed to the tablesaw but I'm not sure.
I'll take any inputs,

I can't open your drawing, but obviuosly your bandsaw just isn't going to fit. I'll take off your hands for you, and will, therefore, solve the problem.
Chris

The drawing opened in Sketchup after unzipping. Which wall has the roller doors? North is usually the top??
I'd reckon you need to make a few machines mobile, with locking castors. Push them into a corner, or in front of some shelving when not in use...ie. a section of shelving in which ready access isn't critical.

Himzol,
You might want to download these woodwork tool components for Sketchup. They'll help you plan your shed more precisely. By the way, lucky you to have 6x9 to play with. Where we live in Craptown, UK, that would be called a house!Peter. As nice a guy as you'll meet anywhere.

Have had a gander, Himzol, more info in the sketchup would be helpful, eg which face is which. Assuming the empty near wall is the rolladoors, the pallet racking is left as you look in and the drill press is to the right. SCMS is at the back.
Do you have pallets on the racking, ie. do you need the racking to be that deep, 1.5m is a chunk outa yer floor space (as if you didn't know ) If not, but if you need the storage for timber or whatever, could you reduce it's depth to 800 or 900 mm?
Could the racking go on the back wall even? Maybe the DP also?
If the thicknesser was on a mobile base than could lock solid when fixed would ease a little space in the middle of the floor. Maybe have the thicknesser oufeed at the same level as the table saw for oufeed support. The buzzer would be handy mobile too.
These are a lot of the issues I have had with my shed, which is 6m wide by 9m deep as well. Also why I like a lot of my stuff to be mobile, eg mobile SCMS workstation, Triton on wheels, mobile wood rack, router table on castors, etc.
I built a loft/mezzanine floor that is about 1.4m high and about 4m x 2.4m (guessing ) in the back right corner of my shed, this is great for storage and allows the mower, slasher, old washing machines ( ), etc underneath.
I don't have a buzzer or thicknesser to allow for though.
Cheers..................Sean

Sean,
lots of good ideas as well thanks. the pallet racking is used for wood storage and the mower etc. live underneath.
Thanks all,
the main reason I'm asking is that at the moment the shed looks like a bomb had exploded in it and I've got things all over the place (worse than normal, honest .
I think I will have to invest in some mobile bases down the track. There's no such thing as too many Routers

G'day Himzol,
Oi! Hands off ChrisB601!
Hizmol, I can't open your thingymebob file, so I don't think any of it will fit in your 6m x 9m shed so you'll just have to offload all your machinery to me and I'll cram it into my 9m x 6m shed.
See, that's your problem, your shed is 6m x 9m, where as mine is 9m x 6m.
So, send me a PM and I'll come and collect your gear. When I get it back here to my joint and I don't want any of it I'll then post a thread offering it as a freebie to anyone who might want it.

1st off put the dusty outside free up some room and reduce dust and noise inside your workshop.
I'd incorporate the SCMS into the pallet racking, then put the drill press on the south wall. This will allow you to put Bsaw north end back to back with your jointer taking up 1 of your roller doors(allows huge infeed and outfeed space!), put the thicknesser mid way along the storage shelfs on the west.
Tablesaw put towards the back leaving a walkways distance from the pallet racking and about 2.5m from the back wall, build your main bench on the western side of the saw.
And bench in the southern wall each side of the DP.
Doing this will allow a large assembly area at with access from the free roller door!
Ps, Dont call it a shed... its has a set out single purpose called woodworking... its now a workshop!....................................................................

HEY!! that sketchup is just what I need to redesign my 9mtr x 6mtr workshop!!
Am downloading it along with the extras as linked... will have a gander at the file once Ive installed it himzol... be good to know what tools youve got and how youve located them and maybe work out a better more userfriendly workshop than I presently have man its crowded in there
I like yourself am hoping like buggary to avoid the mobile bases... but may well have to go that way if all else fails
Re the doors... are they roller doors or sliding doors? sliding doors are a pain in the bum in my view and so this time round I went for the roller doors and theyre a worse pain in the bum! damned cheep crap doors on the expensive shed gawd I hate it when they do that (another pet peeve Shane?? getting a collection there ol mate )... so did you locate them where you were meant to? ie as per the plans? or did you sorta maybe fudge the plans and put the things where you saw the best use could be had?
I changed mine from one at either end of the shed and both being on the one side as per plans to one in the centre of one 9mtr wall and the other at the opposing end of one 6mtr wall this enables me to set the table saw and thicknesser on angles so that it wont matter what length of wood I send through them I can open both doors and the wood is unimpeded
okay will do a pic once this program unloads and I can load it up and do some drawings... hopefully theres nothing techno about it otherwise Im stuffedBelieve me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

8th August 2006, 10:06 PM #14The thicknesser needs to be close to the jointer as they are used in conjunction. The way you have it in the drawing you will be crossing the workshop all the time.
I'd incorporate the SCMS into the pallet racking,
Dingo,
I'm hopeing to get some time this weekend to have a good play with this Sketchup thing and will post what I come up with, either that or a digital pic.
As for the tools I have well:
KS12k tablesaw, Hare forbes 8" jointer, 12" SCMS from Timbercon, 10" CMS from GMC, Router table (in progress) with five routers, 16" Bandsaw from H&F, Ryobi AP13 thicknesser (upgrading to 15" later), No brand drill press, Triton MK3 (just can't bring myself to get rid of it), H&F 2HP dusty, compressor, Bench grinder and one of those surface grinders from Tibercon, and a collection of other hand held power tools.
As for the sliding doors and roller doors, I have both. The roller doors face the street and only get used when I have to bring in something big and heavy , the sliding doors are how I get into the shed and they are at the south end.
The placement at the moment is where I put them when I unpacked/moved them into the shed.
The pallet racking is full of timber at the moment but hope to use a fair bit of it later in the year.
I'll post some pics on the weekend, It won't be pretty
