Default Help with unknown wood please

    G'day all,

I'm a bit intrigued by some timber that I got yesterday from pallets that came from overseas that had carried electrical appliances. I got 4 largish pallets and have quite a bit of it, so if its anything better than crap pine I'll be able to put it to better use.

The timber is unusual, to me at least, in that it appears to be of a different species to any that I have picked from pallets before.

It is a pinkish colour in the main, with a quite pronounced colour in different forms, very close grained, and about 3/4 the weight of radiata (weighed on my electronic scales). It is a little harder than radiata, and just a little less flexible. It appears to have a tendency for the grain to go a bit "furry" when sanded with fine paper.

I have attached some pics, both plain and wet to try and show the colour better. The timber does not absorb water particularly well.

If anyone can identify it, I would appreciate it.

Pallets from the US often have Spruce in them or the local Pine which is lighter in colour or weight than our Radiata. I have had Osage Orange and Walnut in US pallets but on the whole they are US White Pine.

It looks a bit like European Larch. The Kiwis have been known to use it for pallets so others might have done the same. It is very waterproof and also used for house framing and boatbuilding. I believe it works well and could be used in furniture.

    Thanks for your replies.

RR....Hardly any smell, but a subtle delicate indeterminate smell.

Sebastian and Glider......very similar in appearance to European Larch from the pics I have been able to Google up, but also similar to US Eastern White Pine. Both of these species have some similarity, but I am inclined towards the European Larch thought more so because of the slightly pinkish hue.

Whatever the wood is, I have not come across it before wrecking how many pallets I don't know; but I wouldn't mind having quite a cache of it. I think that the colour could be greatly enhanced and become something. I note from Google that both species are widely used for furniture making in their respective territories.

I might add for what its worth, the pallet had an accepted/passed sticker on it from AQIS, whereas all the US timber that I have had so far has always had somewhere a stamp of audit on it by the US, but nothing from AQIS.
