Highly quilted maple veneering without a vacuum bag?
The title says it all. Ive buggered a number of bits of this beautiful veneer now with various combinations of glue, pressure, squeegees and a few %#@%$ words. Being highly quilted it rises in the middle of the quilts but generally I dont see it till the glue has dried. I have no stomach for the $$'s to buy and set up a vacuum bag and pump. Surely Im not the first person in history to have wasted so much time and material?
Ideas, links etc needed. Thx in advance brains trust."We must never become callous. When we experience the conflicts ever more deeply we are living in truth. The quiet conscience is an invention of the devil." - Albert Schweizer

I presume you're talking about modern paper thin veneer and not re-sawn veneer. What adhesive/glue are you using?
If laying thin peeled veneer with some sort of modern adhesive, you should have success if you flatten it first with glycerine/water.
If using animal glue, then just size the veneer and flatten it about a day before you lay it..
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

G'day Sebastiaan,
If you don't find a better solution I have some vac equipment that you could use or borrow. Bit of a drive though from the mountains as I'm in the Sutherland area.

these kits from Lee Valley and Carbatec might be an option if your project is not too large
Vacuum Press - Lee Valley Tools
Roarockit™ Thin Air Press Kits : CARBA-TEC
either of the kits is probably comparable with buying a sheet or two of 25mm MDF board, some 3mm closed cell foam for cushioning, and making a veneer pressregards from Alberta, Canada

Thx guys,
The veneer is 0.6mm Woodwould. Im sure its way to easy to sand through but its what I have. I have been moistening and leaving for an hour before I tried veneering but the quilts still pop up. I have tried a number of variations of the press setup with clamps, mdf and foam. I'll try the glycerine as softener. Ive been trying epoxy, will the glycerine still be OK?
Kind offer Steve, I'll pm you if all this doesnt work.
Thanks for the link Ian. Hand pump, now thats more like it!"We must never become callous. When we experience the conflicts ever more deeply we are living in truth. The quiet conscience is an invention of the devil." - Albert Schweizer

I've never used epoxy; how does it get on with wet wood? Are you letting the veneer dry completely after you've moistened and flattened it?
Glycerine will hav no effect on glue..

Seb, I ruined several very lovey veneers until I started using Glycerine.
You can spray the veneer with glycerine then clamp it between boards for a day or more. Cover the veneer with paper to soak up the excess moisture.
This does a very good job flattening quilted maple.
Then glue it up.
I normally use Titebond II but have used epoxy. Both work fine and the glucerine hasn't been a problem.
If the veneers are a bit damp it is not a problem. Just change the paper each day until the glue is set.Scally
