Default Made some hinges for the artists paint brush box

I dont think I will ever buy another hinge!! Man soooo easy!!... I mean Id hessitated and procrastinated looked at plans for them watched our Canuk mate make some but thought it beyond me... till I had a go! EASY AS!!

So how did I do it? I took a few 1/4in x 1in strips 3in long... 5 actually this gives three fingers on one side and two on the other... now glue them up so that the fingers are the right distance from each other... how did I do that? Well I laid the first two side by side ran some glue spread it and laid the next pair on top of that sliding them till the overlap was what I thought I needed... then run some glue smooth move... until all 5 were where I wanted them bung a clamp on each side and slowly move them apart until I had two separate peices of 1in x 1 1/4in x 3in blocks with fingers each end.

    Easy so far eh?

Then once dry... put them to the top and side of the box mark roughly the line of cut which in my case was a bit off on the lower one (side of box) due to offset lid... to the bandy saw!! a few cuts back to the box mark again as necessary back to bandysaw cut... to sander machine sand smooth taking off excess back and forth to box as needed... use first as pattern to make second...

pic 1 contains one hinge in the raw and one pair of complete hinges cut and sanded

Pic 2 is the set of hinges waiting for drilling the hole for the skewer

Sheoak and Jarrah (Sheoak being the facing timber)

So... where do the brass screws go?

Good job Ding, the best part of making your own is that you'll be able to make/design them to be a perfect match for whatever you're building.

I'm fangin' to see the box when it's all together and finished.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Where will the brass screws go? Anywhere I damned well... ahem... err um through the thick bit at the bottom each hinge end is thick enough to screw one through the side or top and into the hinge itself thus the head will be inside the box and under the lid and thus no metal will be seen!

Yeah mate thats what I liked about it as it came together... choosin the timbers to offset or compliment the timbers already used far better than brass hinges to! nothin against brass hinges Ive used them almost exclusively all these years but now Ive found and made timber ones? mmm ooh yeah aint no more brass hinges in my future! I was thinking initially of using some Tuart for a real color stand out and to match the hardwood of the Jarrah as my second choice was originally Huon I figured using the sheoak would look better and its not as hard as the tuart nor as soft as the huon and it does have a wonderful grain pattern that if I placed the peices right would show...

You and me both mate you and me both!... funny the time I spend on something seems to drag like buggary at the start and through the main body of putting it together then just as its coming together I cant wait to be done with the thing! sorta gets to a point where it becomes... boreing And I start itchin to start something new

Which in this instance will be good cause right now this is the only thing on the bench!!... and I think... well I hope I can start on the canoe! Heck given my knee issues I may even get that done before I go back to the mine  and REALLY upset young Daddles!
