Default HNT Gordon block plane kit

Thought it would be a good idea to try and make my own plane. Although I'm not game or probably good enough to make from scratch so I ordered a HNT Gordon Block plane kit.

    All the parts and instructions

After cutting the dowels into 8 evenish pieces, glue up the main body.

Cleaned up the squeeze out, flattened the sole and squared up the sides by sanding using the jointer infeed table and fence. Then some rough shaping with rasps and sand paper

Sanded through to 240 grit then fitted the brass abutments. This is where things went wrong. One of the abutments was loose (not enough glue or just not tight enough). Just happened that I was passing through Alstonville in 2 weeks so dropped in to explain my predicament and get another pair of abutments. Thank you very much Terry for the advice and also the tour around the workshop.

So on my return drilled out very carefully the loose abutment and glued in the new one. Sanded to 400 grit. Next the careful and scary job of shaping the wedge. Turned out to not be as hard as I thought. Just kept sanding a little bit at a time and checking the fit until all of a sudden I had a functioning block plane.

Plane blade needs a bit of a polish and will probably sand a bit more, then fit the rear handle and hit it with some BLO.
    cheers.

    Nice work Shane.
The abutments were the bits I stressed over as well. Gotta get 'em just right.
Do you need the handle? I think it looks good without it.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

    Thanks guys.
The second go at the abutment might be just a little too tight, but works ok.

Was thinking the same thing. Feels ok without handle. Might double stick tape it on and try it for a while to compare.
