Default I’m down in Hobart for a couple of weeks

Only 6 stalls at the Salamanca Market selling stuff made from Huon Pine this time. Maybe they are running out?
such a great city - my favourite capital city. I think I’ll drive down here some time and visit the west coast and bring back some timber. It’s a long time since I have been over there.

They're definitely not running out. I would say more a case of a lack of international (and to a degree domestic) tourists who are the ones generally buying it. I don't think too many locals are buying huon pine cheese platters.

Since you’re down there, have you noticed any appreciable difference in price for Huon Pine compared to Sydney?

Just interested as I have seen cheaper prices outside of Tasmania at times and wonder what the domestic market is like these days.

The breadboards etc seem reasonable. Every Tasmanian must already have one of them. And a rolling pin. Probably a bowl, too.

I suspect a trip to Strahan would be necessary to find some unprocessed wood at a reasonable price. Though maybe they figure every outsider who drives there will gladly pay whatever it costs? I won’t be going there this time, but one day I might again. It’s a great place, Tasmania.

Quite true. Forestry Tasmania and Morrisson's are releasing a controlled quantity of Huon onto the market each year.

Why would we? We all have Huon pine cutting boards. For cheese and sushi platters we tend to use something a little more delicate such as golden sassafras, myrtle or cheesewood.

I didn’t realise they were releasing controlled quantities. I might try and get to Geeveston, but might not have time.
Coles Bay at the moment - did a 13klm walk today to Wineglass Bay and back across the isthmus.
Back to Hobart tomorrow and then on Saturday we start the Three Capes Track.
Tassie is my favourite state and Hobart my favourite capital city - don’t tell Sydney people I said that. I think I have been here about 15 times.

You'll enjoy the Three Capes walk - I did it three years ago with my daughter. Plenty of wildlife, and magnificent scenery.

    The walk was great.
I set off with a 16kg pack, which might have been a bit excessive, but we ate very well. Those youngsters with their rehydrated food were envious of our evening meals.
I was envious of their knees.

Is that a factor of backpack weight, or the number of birthdays?

    It's a combination.

I'm sure there is an ideal pack weight based on birthdays and I'm equally sure I exceeded it.

We bought some very good food from that German shop just off Salamanca - Wursthaus - that I shop at every time I'm in Hobart. Their eye fillet was good and they had lost of other great stuff. We ate well, but there were short term consequences.

And they would have some very nice pinots to go with the fillet!

For mainlanders: please note that the letter "v" is absent from Wursthaus. It is pronounced exactly as spelt - "worst house".

Yes, we bought a bottle of their wine and decanted it into a plastic pouch at their counter. That amused them. Bought a second bottle at a winery on the drive from Freycinet.

I know how it is with the heavy pack. I carried 11kg of camera gear - I figured I was only going to do the walk once, and didn't want to miss out on anything.
We ate well, but not as well as you.
