Disc Centreing
On my disc sander I used a centre finder to mark the centre of the platen (or whatever it's called) and carefully (accurately) drilled a small dimple into the middle. To fit the sanding discs I punch a 1/4" hole through the centre of them and slide them onto a 1/4" transfer punch. I just have to put the point of the punch into the little dimple and carefully slide the disc along until it comes into contact with the velcro face on the platen. If the velcro is damaged, it can be replaced in the same way. It ends up centred beautifully every time.
I have to take the table off the machine to do this, but that's easy with my machine.
I hope that makes sense. Works for me anyway.
Cheers
Geoff

305 mm conversion kit
My 5 cents on the subject.
Elraco distributors sell the conversion kit. I've used it on my Woodfast sander.
Hardware for kitchen, furniture, school , Hardware.net.au-Hardware Online
They also have very reasonably priced 305 mm velcro discs and
very good and cheap rubber belt restorer
elraco.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=162
which works fine with discs too. I use it all the time.
Good luck

Sounds like you're a little luckier than me Geoff. Even with the table off mine, there's a 1/4" rod horizontally across in front of the disc that the table pivots on and it also connects the two rack & pinion mechanisms. Could take that stuff off too, but it makes it into too big a job. I'd need to remove the whole double rack and pinion tilt mechanism.

I have done two velcro conversion kits (305mm) in the last couple of weeks. It is a bit tricky and like putting the new Rego sticker on your car's windscreen. They were a Norton product and extremely sticky. I initially removed about a quarter of the backing sheet, lined it up with the edge and proceeded to pat it down with my hand as I further removed the backing sheet.
Got to agree that the surface has more cushion with the velcro but I work at a college and the students just park the piece they are sanding in the one spot and push far too hard and wear the sanding discs out. Changing them regularly with the old disc glue was a real pain in the grass!
