How do you do this?
Hi,
I am building a home theatre and would like to build steps and trip around the riser. A stair builder said it look to be Bluegum capping on top and Tasmanian Oak riser.
The bluegum would be 140mm by 32mm
Tasmanian Oak riser is 380mm high.
My question when I go looking for wood such as Tasmanian Oak at bunnings, they only come in at 185mm wide.
So how do you get the wood that wide?

You could use the Bunnings boards and join them or go down the likely more expensive road and buy from a specialty timber outlet. I'm not familiar with Sydney outlets but i'm sure someone will chime in with the info.

My look at the picture, it appears to be maybe plywood. Plyco here in Melbourne have among many veneers, Tas oak. Surely Sydney will have a similar company- if not plyco will ship to you.
my take on the image is they have probably used a dark veneer plywood behind with the lighter one routed as the face panel.
cheers

Veneered MDF or plywood for both layers would be much easier than using wide boards. More stable and no short grain which would be the problem at the base of each of the slots.

oh, some great options here. I did not know about plywood I will have to reach out to Plyco.
Veneered MDF is also very interesting, not sure that would work on the face plate as I will need CNC to create the cut outs on the face. But may be a good options for the top section.
Just fyi, the reason we need the cut outs is we use the raiser as a base trap as it is filled with insulation. That is also why you see the grill on the top carpet area.
Some great advise here to explore options I did not know exist.
Thank you

A router will do for the cut outs.

There would be plenty of ply suppliers in Sydney, google is your friend. Try Bruynzeel Sydney fr starters in google.
