Default How long to make these

Hi. A friend of ours has had some furniture custom made. He is not very happy with the result. Personally, I dont think he did too badly - and advised that he may be underestimating the time involved in solid wood joinery. I'm not too sure of my point of view though, and was wondering if some of you would give estimates for how long it would take to make the following pieces. These arent the things he got made - they are just items I chose because they are of similar complexity.

So how long would it take you to make these. I'm talking solid wood, medium quality joinery, one offs but to a fairly standard design. Imagine you have been given just a sketch and basic dimensions, working in a fairly well set up workshop. Dont include time for applying stain or varnish, and include time for just the planning and the woodwork - I know there are many other things that go on in a small professional workshop that must be costed in (like paperwork, doing quotes, talking to tyre-kickers etc) but he can work those out for himself.

ps. in case you are wondering, it wasnt me who made them - I'm not interested in that kind of work at all. It did make me think it must be difficult when you work for a long time on something and the customer is clearly not happy - and very likely for all the wrong reasons.

    thanks
    Arron

They would take me weeks, but them Im a not a professional (or even a good amateur)

However, I have come to realise that it takes a hell of a lot longer than it looks to make even simple things...

Just dimensioning and prepping the wood takes longer than you think. Ie if I grab a slab of jarrah that I want to work with, then re-sawing, jointing and thicknessing and cutting to size takes a while and Im using machinery!...

Dunno why you are excluding finishing (unless he is doing it himself). I also find that this is one of the most time consuming tasks....

It's often amazing how people who have no idea think things are simple and easy

Hi Redback, I'm excluding finishing because I cant remember how it was done. I'm excluding all the other extra work done in a small business because he probably has a better idea of that then most people. Its just the cabinetry that we differ on.

    Hi Arron,

I'm just a weekend warrior, but I would guess that, stock acquisition aside, the three items could be done in:
Sideboard (and assuming M/T carcass and dovetailed drawers) 20 hrs
    Coffee table 4 hours
    Side table 6 - 8 hours

All of the above depending on the quality of bare wood finish required and state of stock timber.

    Cheers!

    Ok,

I apologise - obviously using the wrong estimating method - also, and please note, I was talking on time to make - not on time to quote for making

    Cheers

Auld you must be a fast worker!

Arron, pic 1 depending on construction methods ie, are the panels on this buffet veneered pb/mdf or are they real wood panels?... define medium quality joinery? What wood? My estimate on using what I call quality joinery bout 20-30hrs veneered panels and around 50-60 real wood panels.($800-$1500 depending on wood type/size)
    pic 2 large table, 10-30hrs and as above($500-1000 coffee-kitchen)
pic 3 side table, 10-15hrs and as above($200-400)

Thanks Harry and Auld. I'm talking about solid wood throughout. I realise now that the ones I have shown here may well be veneered mdf, but the ones my friend bought are solid wood.

I am struggling to define 'medium quality joinery'. I just meant a nice job, better then Freedom furniture, but not high end stuff. It is the quality I would expect to see in Coco Republic shops, which I know doesnt help those who dont live in Sydney much.

Any more takers ? The question is open to dedicated amateurs as well.

    thanks

At the rate I work, it would take me dead-set ages. It takes me hours just to design these things, let alone work out how to make it or actually make them. I'd need Al's timing, not Steve's!

As with most jobs, a good rule of thumb is to double the cost and the time taken to make it.

    Using solid Tas oak

    Sideboard - looks small (1600 x 450) 25hrs $2800

    Table - (1800 x 900) 15hrs $1900

End table - 8hrs $750 ... flaired legs add cost. Knock off 75 bucks if they were straight.

Give me another 25% if you want Blackwood / Jarrah etc.

    There's my call to respond

For the coffee table, I would say about 2 days.
The Bedside table, about 3-4 days
The Sideboard - about 4 days minimum.

Then I'd double the number of days just to be on the safe side. Ruff estimates only as has been said previously, a lot depends on the state of the wood before even starting.

    cheers

just wish I had a fairly well set up shop....
If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people like me ask? Do I get smart just in time to ask questions?

I reckon RRustic got it about right for us amateurs

Your pics are difficult to judge size by and medium quality joinery means??
Did you want dovetails with that?
    Will lap joints do?
I could do half rebates for less??????

You get what you pay for and sometimes you get less. Only rarely do you get more.

    FWIW

Arron, from design to finish that sideboard would probably soak up most of three weeks in my workshop. Made in solid Jarrah or Marri it would run about $4,000. The coffee table about 3 days ($600) the side table about 4 days ($800). But I'm just a hobbyist turned full time woodworker. Not a pro-shop operator. But it's all done very patiently and made to last.

Pro shop / gallery furniture makers I know usually estimate one weeks work for high end dining tables ($6,000). The sideboard would run nearer to 2 weeks but cost about $7000 or more. As a guess.
