How to make this work?
Evening all,
SWMBO has decreed that I am to build two chests of drawers, most of the design is up to me but the drawers must be flush with the front of the cabinet. The drawer panels will be 130mm boards and the separation panels 42mm or a generic width from my supplier. I will cut the drawer fronts out of the 130mm lengths then butt joint with biscuits as this will allow any grain to continue across the front of the unit. I am fairly happy with that bit but I am to have the drawers on runners. I intend to use dovetails on the drawers (if santa is nice to me, Gifkins) and cannot think how to get them in there. I could use concealed runners underneath but then I couldnt remove the drawers once installed.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...
Cheers and Merry Christmas

Hi,
you could design it so you can use these. Go to page 829
Smooth action, and when base mounted (underneath the drawer) has a 60kg carrying capacity.I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Hi Corbs, Looks like a great project, but I have to confess, I'm confused as to what the problem is. Sorry.
I thought that if you built the drawer, then attached it to the drawer front, you'd be able to make the drawer size whatever was needed so it would move in the space however you wanted it to, eg using metal slides or wooden runners. Am I on the right track or have I missed your point completely
cheers

Matrix,
That is probably what I am going to have to use for the runners but from what I have seen of them once they are fixed the drawer cant be removed without unscrewing the runners.
Wendy,
I want the front of the drawer to be the actual front and not false. Then the end of the dovetail tails should show on the front of the unit to create a feature on the front. By doing this there would not be any room to side mount runners unless someone could think of something that I haven't. I think Matrix's bottom mounted runners may be the way for me to go.
Cheers...

You could rebate the runners into the side of the drawers, stopping just before the front.

What about making the drawer sides a bit thicker than normal, and cutting a dado into the actual side of the drawer? Then you mount a hardwood runner on the frame on each side?
Pic attached that might explain it better.
Ian
Edit.. types faster, but I did a picture

If you want to save a few $$$, the rebate and wooden runners are the way to go. Wax them, to get them running smooth.
If $$$ arent a concern, those ones Matrix posted up look nice

Hi Corbs,
I am currently making the same thing (sort of). If you want, I can scan and send to you a plan for exactly what you want to achieve complete with all necessary info. Its from a book called Making Carcass Furniture.

Alex, if you are referring to the type that Matrix has referred to above I didnt realise they could be removed. If they can then that would solve all my problems as they give a full extension open and a large load capacity.

I intend to use 19mm wood for fronts and drawer sides to recessing the runners into the side of the drawers is definately an option for me to look into. Thanks for all your assistance so far and I will be sure to post pics once this thing goes past the planning phase and into the cutting, glueing and swearing phase.
