What to do with a huge burl
Hey there woodworkers.
For about 15 years I have been eyeing off a burl that is around 1.5m in diameter on a 600m diameter Brush Box (I think) on my Gold Coast property.
While not quite laying awake at night worrying about it, I have often played with the idea of harvesting it but have left it in place because I don't like to interfere with the bush too much.
My mind was made up for me overnight when the tree came down..onto a shed unfortunately - http://www.hahaha.com.au/weblog/index.php?thought=1385
Crap about the shed but it finally gives me access to the burl. I guess I am picking brains here...what on earth should I do with the thing? I certainly don't want to leave it there to rot but not being a woodworker (yet) I am not sure of the possibilities.
Fire away.

Shame about your shed, can you claim it on insurance?
If you don't have anyway of 'harvesting' the burl, you will been to find somebody local with a big chainsaw to slice it up for you.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Have a ritual burning to the gods of the bush to protect us from imposing on the rest of us yet another burl coffee table!
Seriously, if you have to ask then don't make it or have it made into anything.

Microbe,
Welcome to the site.
The question has a lot of iffs. If you can harvest it and use it then go for it.
If it is any good for turning or woodwork remains to be seen after cutting. I think the best you can do is find someone to cut it for a share of the timber. While timber is expensive in some cases it comes down to what timber and the labor cost. To be worth money it has to be cut ,milled, and survive the seasoning without cracking, mold, rot and insect damage. If you have a chainsaw or hire one then cut it for whatever project you have in mind. Seal it and season. Lots of info on here on seasoning, do a bit if research. If it is a big log and beyond a man and his chainsaw then you will need help from the milling mob on this site.
Regards
John

I live on the Gold Coast, have a big chain saw, and love trimming burls - have I got a deal for you . I can also give some ideas of what WE can do with it.
What to do with a burl depends on what size it is and what type. Happy to just give advise, or help take it away. I'll PM you my details.

The answer to the question is obvious really - send it to me
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

THanks everyone
Thanks for all the replies. I especially appreciate the humour and good natured banter.
I have spoken to a member of this forum who lives nearby and he is going to come have a look at it this weekend.
To protect him from physical and forum abuse for getting in first, Neil shall have to remain nameless.
