Default Asking for a HUGE christmas favour

    Hey team,

I'm trying to get some chopping boards done by chrissy for my brother to take with him overseas (he lives in canada and needs some god Australian hardwood in his home).

Anyway, the slabs I've bought are a bit warped and I need to pass them through a thicknesser but mines max capacity is 300mm and this slabs 460mm (at it's widest).

Is there anyone in the Brisbane area that has one that would be willing to run them through a few times? Total length of the boards is about 1200mm and it's bluegum.

I know this is a long shot, but any help would be hugely appreciated.

P.s Alternatively, any advice on using an electric handplane to get a nice flat/even finish.

    Thanks in advance

Default Do you have a router?

This is another method you might consider if you have a router.

Doing it with an electric handplaner is possible. Just attack it like any other planing job. Work on the cup up side first taking off the high spots, checking with winding sticks as you go. There is probably a Paul Sellars video that would help in his workbench build series.

Another option is to find a cabinet maker with a wide belt sander or a stroke sander. If it is badly cupped it will have to be worked through a couple of grades of grit if you can't pre flatten it by hand. I know there is a factory down here in Burleigh who has a suitable machine for wide tabletops but I don't know if he would be open this week.

Here's the link to the vid where Sellars flattens his bench top. Hogging off with an electric planer is possible instead of using just a handplane, but it will eventually need to be finished with a handplane.
