    Default Huon and Blackwood cabinet

For want of a better section, I'll put this in here.

On "The Collectors" on the ABC the other night there was a section on the Ballarat Antiques Fair.
They showed a Huon Pine and Blackwood piece, that I thought was a mantle and fireplace surround - (maybe a sideboard), it was from around 1830 - 1860 I think.
Basically it was a Huon cabinet, with a heap of drawers set into it, with a mantle. There were blackwood carvings that framed the drawers, raised and twisted "chippendale" style carvings.

Did anyone see this? Did anyone go to the Ballartat Antique Fair and can get me a photo of the piece, or take a look in a catalogue to see if its in there??

I can not get the imagery out of my head, quite spectacular and its good to see quality Australian design.

    Thanks
    Cheers,
    Clinton

Clinton, likewise I saw it briefly and it was such an unusual piece that it has stuck in my mind too. What a spectacular piece and being Australian made just adds to the interest. If there are photos could I see them too?

Totally unrelated, but an ordinary looking 6 legged blackwood cabinet sold at auction here the other day for $94,000. Descripiton said something like ' two locks not working, light damage'. Cor.

BTW - What has 6 legs and runs around in the paddock doing 'u'-ies?

Bugger.... spent some time over the weekend looking for info on the piece and could not find any.
The bad thing is that I can't quite picture the detail of the blackwood carving.

I cross my fingers and hope that a forumite has a starting point for tracking this thing down.

As a starting point the abc might send you a pic of the piece or put a pic on their website etc.

That's a chest-of-drawers, or more specifically a tallboy. I agree it's interesting, and perhaps spectacular, but am I alone in also finding it somewhat ugly? Judging only by a photo of course.

    One man's meat...........

Look at it this way - it may be a bit over-done, but it's a challenge! And where would we get to without setting a few goals?? Go for it, Clinton!

    Lignum - you the champ!

I really liked the blackwood "framing", although I think I might be making assumptions as to how it was done. I really didn't see enough of the tallboy - so little, in fact, that I thought it was a fireplace surround.

So good to see a good Aussie design piece.
I thought it was much larger - I agree its a bit 'overdone' to todays standards of 'minimilisation'. The blackwood carving 'framing' would please me more if it were a little less - spread over a larger area.
    Its very interesting though.
