Huon pine info
Hi i posted this thread on the timber forum but i think i may have better luck here.
(I am currently making a cabinet humidor and wondered if anyone could help me with ideas for an Australian alternative to cigar box (Spanish) cedar for the lining. I understand that Celery top pine and Huon pine are both very moisture resistant and Huon pine has a very strong odour however i'm not 100% sure if they are appropriate for humidors .
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks)
Does anyone know about the odour of Huon pine, negative ,positive aspects?
Can anyone think of any reason why Huon pine should not be used in a humidor?
Has anyone ever used an alternative to Spanish cedar for a humidor?
Please excuse me if my post is irregular. Im as green as they get when it comes to internet forums.
Thanks

Well, I don't know much about humidors.
Huon has a very distinct smell which most people speak positively about. Certainly woodies do. I couldn't see why you could not use it ina fine box.My blog: ~ for the love of wood ~ - http://theloveofwood.blogspot.com/

Huon was used for boats and sea chests because it has strong insecticidal, anti-fungal and anti-rot properties. As has been posted by Ern, i don't think you'd want it in a humidor as it would flavour your cigars with that pine/vanillan scent. I have a rolling pin that was my great grandmothers and every time I open the kitchen drawer to get it out the scent wafts out. Great for a rolling pin, probably not so good for cigars.

In the lost posts mention was made of the Wiki entry on humidors.
Their purpose is to maintain humidity and temperature. Flash ones have thermometers and hygrometers.
Course for most woodies I guess it's just a reason to make a nice box as we aren't storing and ageing Cubans at $20 a pop.
(That's Cuban cigars Underfoot. Not emigres.
Bullfighting comedians, .... LOL.)Cheers, Ern
