Question Where can I get some Huon Pine surface/thickness planed?

    Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on WWF, so please bear with me; and before I start, I did search this question on the forum and google first.

I recently purchased a few bits and pieces of Huon Pine to make a couch end table. As I'm going to go with a burnished finish, I want the surface to be fairly smooth-as before I even get the sander to it (currently very rough sawn, bit too much to sand). Does anyone know where I can get something like this done? I've tried to contact a few cabinet/furniture shops around, and they're not overly enthusiastic.

List of pieces to be planed (sizes) below:

1 off Table top 330x720x25thk 2 sides - top and bottom
2 off Surrounds 80x25x850 All 4 sides excluding ends
4 off Legs 50x50x800 All 4 sides excluding ends

Generally, I only need to plane off about a mm or less, but to a smooth finish.

    Thanks in advance!

    Rob

    Welcome Aboard, Rob.

A local joinery shop should be able to both plane and thickness your Huon pine for a fairly nominal fee. Friends, yellow pages or google should aid your search.

Or a Forum Member may be able to assist.

However, if the HP is recycled or dirty then all are most unlikely to let it near their machines. Risks and costs of damaged blades and down-time are just too high.

DGI in western Sydney did a huon table top for me some 15 years ago. They thickness sanded, rounded edges and two pack finished for me for a very good price. The finish was the same as that they use on glu-lam benches - silky smooth and super tough even for wet stuff. Best $ i ever spent at the time.

Nor a very big job, you could do it yourself with a hand plane

Thanks all. I'll have a better look around, particularly the joinery shops. The HP is fresh cut, so shouldn't be any issues with metal, etc. Also, the DGI option might be a go-er, I hadn't considered two pack, and was worried that burnished is a bit of a delicate finish.

    Cheers!
