    Default Hutch WIP

I have started a combination lowline hutch, with a wine rack included. Here is my (very) rough plan.
    IMG_0755.JPG

It is made primarily of 45 by 220mm hardwood, first I cleaned the edges on the triton and joined them together. Next, I routed the lower two cross panels to take the uprights for the wine rack.

The last I got to do on the weekend was to join the two centre uprights to the panels. I used Tiitebond 3 PVA glue.

Hopefully I should get to do some during the nights after work this week.

    HEAVY-DUTY!

Looks nice, must be heavy though? What will this be carrying? or were you going more for the aesthetics of the 45mm timber?

Are you milling your own timber? I'd have to sell a kidney to afford that much hardwood...

    Keep up the good work.

Unfortunately, I'm not milling my own, and it definately has cost more than I would have liked, but you don't get a huge choice up here in Mackay, especially if you do want something seasoned.

I do like the heavy duty look, with some of the joins showing. I think the weight will come out somewhere in the vicinity of about 250 - 275kgs. It is really a case of the old adage of measure twice and cut once, I don't want to cut anything a bit short!

Got some more time over the weekend.

The two ends and top are now also attached. I have made a slight change to the design, now only having two drawers instead of three across the top.

So far on this project, it has broken both an old circular saw in the triton bench, and an old router.

My next problem, other than a lot of sanding will be how to get the thing off the saw horses.......

Sorry, it hasn't been much of a WIP, but I am nearly there now.

I have finished with hardened shellac, just need to fit in the two draws at the top and I'm done.

Well done. I like the way you've emphasized the joints where the diagonals meet the corners.

Nice job on the unit. Like yourself, I love the heavier sections. I recently did the whole kitchen (carcasses and wall unit) with 190 by 45 KDHW. I think I was paying around $20.00 per metre from Bunning Trade. The good thing about B/T is that they usually have plenty of stock, so I don't mind spending the time being selective and omitting lengths with excessive gum veins and knots. Are the prices similar up there?
If you're interested in using dovetail joints in your next project take a look at my other thread. Actually I'm happy to post the PDFs of the drawings if anyone's interested in making their own from ply.
