hey i done a search and cant find anything about them. But do u know if it is a nation wide mitre ten special or just that store? Or was it only the one you picked up that was reduced?

I think you'll find that the blades are reversible - like larger versions of the reversible "slithers" that are found in most 82mm Planers. As such you wont be able to sharpen them per se, but there is a cheap little "honing" tool sold by Carbatec that will help to keep an edge on them. You'd have to expect the blades to be krappy at that price, though. The upside of being non-sharpenable is that alignment of the blades is a simple drop-in and tighten-up exercise, which is substantially easier than the alignment required with the resharpenable variety.

Great buy by the sound of it! Did the thing come with a Dust Chute?

K&D Mitre 10 Hobart had a truck load of Icon planer/thicknessers on display. Subsequently found them on the cover of their July junk mail, so they are available Tas-wide until 21-7-08; I do not know about the mainland states.

It comes with a dust shute that can be put on to eject either to the left or right side; handbook recommends connecting it to a wet & dry vacuum cleaner. Without the vacuum I'd say that at least 95% of the shavings go through the shute.

Now that I have read the handbook, it says to replace the blades; does not mention sharpening them which confirms your view, Batpig. Will need to source some blades as the existing ones are probably crappy; might be able to get ones with good quality steel. That Carbatec honing tool seems a good idea to extend blade life.

Google search gave just one return and that alleged that it said on the box that Icon was made by GMC - no mention of GMC on my box - and that it was sold under a number of brand labels including Icon, GMC, Carbatec, Ozito, Ryobi, etc. Do not know how credible that post was.

Sounds like one Heck of a deal... sendforth a picture and we can determine who manufactured it.

Is it a GMC? Looks to be an OK tool for the money... I have some GMC tools and are well satisfied (considering the Price)

Man their website is useless. I'll try to visit a mitre10 today and see if they have them in qld. If anyone else spots some outside tassie at that price please post. I'm sure there are people here who'd be interested, like me for example. At that price it'd be worth the postal cost...

, repeat one-zero-nine dollars. It features 2.4mm cut per pass, 317mm planing width, 2000 watt motor, 30 kgs net weight - and seems well made. Incredibly well made for the price.

Hi Everyone

Here are some pictures of my new Icon planer/thicknesser. Never had one before, so I'll have to find a better place to put it than on top of the Triton.

For anyone seriously interested, if its not available outside Tas, then K&D might be able to courier it to overcome AusPost 20 kg limit. Its packaged in a much heavier than standard cardboard carton with about 50mm foam inside so I guess it would travel well.

I take it K&D are the local mitre10 agents ? I'll try and get to a mitre10 and check but I'd guess that's a tassy only special.

The machine has the usual problem of height adgustment by a pair of middle screws, but given all the equivalent machines are $300 and up that's a wicked bargain.

If it can be courier'd to Brisbane I'd probably be interested, but I'll try and check locally first.

I have a bizarre 2 speed life at the moment. Not at all busy at work, and going on hols next week, but after work have 100 things to do so run off my feet. Bit frustrating...

Im very interested however I am in Newcastle. I called about 5 Mitre 10's around here and they all said they could not get a thicknesser in the icon range although one guy said he tried to order them but they never turned up.

What do you think it would cost to get one sent from Tas to Newcastle? And how would I go about working that out. Cheers

I've got the chap from indooroopilly onto it. He knew exactly what I was talking about, and also said the icon's are made by GMC for M10, AND that M10 has done some sort of deal with bosch in the wake of the ryobi/bunnings deal.

M10 has a new cattledog on the website today, but the thicknesser isn't on it. It might be that the special will come north over the next few weeks ? Anyway I'll update when/if mr M10 calls me back.

Yep, K&D are the central Hobart Mitre 10 agents.

No idea what it would cost to ship them, or even if K&D would do it. Might be worth a phone call to them.

I have subsequently found a sticker on the bottom of the Icon box that says:

"GMC
Global Machine Company
Model: INPLTH
...etc"

Guess INPLTH stands for ICon PLaner THicknesser !

K&D say the price has been reduced from $299, which is a pretty good reduction.
