The Sharpening DVD probably should be a series:
    1. Sharpening by Hand
    2. Scary Sharp
    3. etc
    4. etc

Toolin Around's offer of a Sharpening Tutorial would be a good one to video - if all participants and especially Toolin agree.

    Cheers

Brilliant! That's exactly the sort of stuff we need. Hope he agrees.

This is a great idea. The one thought I had was whether the way to select what goes on a DVD is to have the clips submitted in the same way as threads and available for download through the BB during the year (probably in a rough/unedited and low quality (both sound and picture)form ) and then select those which are most popular to be properly edited and made available in DVD form (with higher resolution, good sound and all the pretty stuff). In this way you won't have to commission anyone to do anything and the DVD will be an accurate reflection of what our contributors do...

PS I want BM and Boatmik to do a DVD tutorial on building a PD Racer......

Id be in for one, as long as you keep Al out of that foil bikini...:eek:

How about getting SKEW to do one on pens, and get stirlo to do something, to show that you dont need to be an old fart to be into woodworking

Great idea from our fiendly flexible contributor..

That's sort of what I had in mind. The way it can be done is to make the recording and have it in good quality. (Keep in mind that this is just guys in the shed stuff so it's not a Peter Weir production we are looking for) Those vidoes can then be crunched down considerably. A typical 30 minute DVD quality file is around 800MB so it's way too big for downloading in most cases. If they are converted to DiVx (avi) format, they get down to around 160MB and are still reasonable quality. It's those files which we could share via the torrent system. That is a great way to do it because as people download the file, they become a 'seed' from which others in turn can download. If we have a few, we can get the bigger files sent on a disk to a central point (as I said, I'm happy to do this), put them on to a DVD, convert them for use in a normal DVD player with a menu and mail them to those who want better quality copies.

I've been giving the piracy thing some thought but I don't think it's an issue. It's going to be more like a collection of home movies than something worth a great deal of money. Don't forget, there are lots of commercial DVD's available from the likes of Taunton Press on this sort of thing. Ours would be more basic and a 'warts and all' type production.

Once you share a file as a torrent, it's available to anybody who wants to get it. There are millions of them (torrents) so it's not an issue in my view.

    Thumbs up

    G'day,

I'd be happy to put my hand up as I've got the software to edit and put proper menus and burn to DVDs etc.

A serious thread by Gumby hey, did some of that red grape stuff mellow you a bit my friend?

I make things, I just take a long time.

I agree with you. From what I understand Gumby, You intend to use member contributions that you get for free & pass them on to anybody that wants them for free or next to it (covering costs). You have no intention of copywriting the DVD in the first place & if somebody has one & they burn a copy for their mate, you will not be bent out of shape by this.

How can copyright be broken if your FREE product is not copyright protected in the first place.

I can understand people not wanting or being able to support Gumby in his venture, If I submitted a video it would be a matter of watch what I do & then don't do it because I have very little idea about my woodwork, but I don't understand why anyone looks for reasons to complicate the issue.

You have my MORAL SUPPORT Gumby, & I'll have a copy of your DVD thanks Mate.

    Bloody good idea

Far from an expert, Gumby, but would be willing to do a few basic scrollsaw/fretwork bits if the project gets off the ground.

Don't have a video camera myself, though.

    Cheers...............Sean

OK I will do the sharpening section but I need few advisers. Anyone?

I will also do the Triton vs real tablesaw section.

And Silent will do the "How to get cheap petrol in winter" section.

COPYRIGHT is vested in the author of any work, whether it is distributed freely or not, (to oversimplify a complicated area of law) it is a breach of copyright to take someone else's work and sell it.

It is now possible to register a "Creative Commons" licence which in essence allows free distribution and in theory lays claim to copyright, and it's a free-ish service.

I DON'T HAVE A MOVIE CAMERA Don't worry, most digital cameras can take movie clips of up to a few minutes duration, which is heaps to cobble together a story. For web reproduction (ie playback on computer screen) via blip.tv, vmix, or youtube, the recommended resolution is 320 x 240 which is well within the capability of the least sophisticated bit of gear.

The PDRacer clips are from my still camera, and my neighbour's. The quality is fine on CD, but I'm still getting the hang of editing for the web!

I DON'T HAVE ANY MOVIE EDITING SOFTWARE Of course not, you've got a PC! (That was for Echidna! ). DownloadFree DV (If you have a Mac and don't like iMovie, there's a Mac version as well. (That was for Echidna too! )

    Have fun kiddies!
