Default Just an idea - The Forum DVD

I was playing around on the combo jointer/thicknesser this afternoon (what fun straightening up some rough sawn hard wood left over by the builders when they were here recently. I was thinking about the recent thread where we were trying somewhat unsuccessfully to explain to a couple of members the difference between a jointer and a thicknesser. I thought maybe I shouldtake a piece of this timber and do a step-by-step tutorial on how it goes from being rough and uneven to a lovely smooth, square edged length, ready for my next side table.

I then hit upon the idea of videoing the whole thing. Not too long, maybe 10-15 minutes. I could then burn it to the computer, convert it to another format like avi and make it available for sharing via Azureus, the torrent sharing program. (I've been doing this for a lot of people who were following the Volvo Ocean Race and we were sharing 160MB vidoe files easily).

I liked the idea but to take it a step further, what about if some others in here were willing to do something similar on other equipment. Could we end up with a Forum DVD which would help people get started?

It would mean we'd need to coordinate the video files by sending them to a central spot where they could be turned into DVD format with a menu etc. That's not hard and I could do it. We could then burn them as needed and sell them for the cost of the blank DVD and postage. Not making any money, but just as a forum welcome type thing. If it worked, we could go on a bit further and do some more detailed projects.

We'd of course require people with a digital video camera to do each section but they are pretty much everywhere these days so I don't think it would be too hard. Maybe a couple of forum members could get together and do one in an afternoon. Nothing professional, just something helpful which would cover the usual topics asked in here which we go over many times.

If Neil wanted to get involved, he could distribute them and if he made a few bucks on them I'd be happy with that. It would be a way of repaying him for this forum.

It's just an idea folks and I'm looking for responses. Could it be done, is it worth taking further? Or should I just go back to the TV and watch Collingwood get flogged again?

Sounds like a good idea to me.

What about the legal aspect though? Like for instance if someone was an idiot an injured themselves by following advice that was on the DVD.

You'd probably have to have some sort of disclaimer I guess.

Still, sounds like a good idea in principle.

Gumby, It sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately I am not in a position to help at the moment .

Craig, I have seen disclaimers on a few handyman type videos I've borrowed from the library so it's not uncommon.

    Hi Gumby,

I certainly like the idea of your Jointer tutorial/demonstration, and would be one of the first to download it. I also like the idea of having other such videos (avi?) availlable, and I've alreday been hunting the net for them, and watching what I can find. In fact, that's how I learnt that I was actually holding the wrong end of the chisel when turning. It certainly speeds things up pushing the other end against the spinning wood.

There you go, I'm digressing again.

Getting back onto subject, I beleive you're a bit premature with thinking abaout the dvd at this stage. ie. too big, too soon. My advice, is to keep going with the individual single subject avi's, for the time being. If you can get more people involved, and can build up the library, then you can reconsider compiling a dvd.

Terrific, we've made our first sale. Now if we only had the product.

Maybe we should get someone from Collingwood to host the show. After all they can't play football.

    Gumby,

Maybe better than the DVD, although it's a bit hard to maintain quality, is YouTube or Vmix.

If you haven't already seen the Puddleduck Videos on Vmix-Check them out here

Or today, I've just been mucking round with You Tube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY2NzNi5cdo

It'd be really easy to upload an entire forum library, all we'd need was a "librarian".

    Cheers,

    P

    Bollocks, Major.
God is a Collingwood supporter, and tweaks the teams fortunes to test our faith.
The rest of you are just the the rabble that have to exist so Collingwood can play another team.

    Simple.

That proves that God is malevolent being for putting such a blight on this earth.

It's good to see you back in action Gumby. An easy way to start perhaps would be a BLOG?
