Have a problem,- your ideas, & solutions please
Not sure where to put this problem,- if it don't fit here, please move it accordingly.
Most folk know what a Trophy Base is, or looks like. Correct ?
I have been given some Polished Granite off-cuts from someone, who got them from a Headstone Mason, and a mate who has seen them, asked me to make him some Trophy Bases, using slices from the polished Granite IF practical, ( alternatively I can make the Trophy Bases from nicely shaped & polished timber, which I prefer to work with. )
The problem,- How on earth does one cut 25mm. deep slices off the Granite without a, " shattering experience," then polish the newly cut sections without spending heaps of time, and Dollars in the process ?
The Granite off-cuts vary in width, & have an average thickness of about 100mm, ( 4 inches ) if that's any help.
Have already contacted our local, ( Y.P. ) Headstone mason who basically said I require about Five grand's worth of specialized equipment, which is very expensive for about two dozen Trophy bases
Any good useful ideas anyone, or, better still, has anyone done anything like this ?

Diamond cutting and shaping wheels, available on ebay, at anywhere from $10-100 or more each.

Can be cut with a diamond wheel but the polishing is the tricky/expensive bit. Timber is so much more forgiving.

For polishing, contact a local mob who do granite bench-tops or terazzo floors. They may be able to tell you where you can buy a few different grades of hand-polishing stones.

If its a one off project, you could just hire the equipment for a few days. Do some research and find out what machine you need and if you have the skills to use it.
Then check out your local hire places and see if the machinery is available.

for a one off, either hire a wet block saw or find a tiler or block layer and pay them to cut it for you
you could polish a dozen or so on a diamond sharpening plate or with loose diamonds on a suitable substrateregards from Alberta, Canada

Go with timber.
Reality is no background music.
