The shelf assembly is now cleaned up, sanded, stained to match the desk and had its first coat of WOP

I have yet to make the 5 inserts that fit into the frame to make the shelf but they will sit flush with the frame and be covered with black suede

the corner joint cleaned up well but, as I was matching it to a 'well -used' antique I left some obvious scribe lines and dings just like the desk it will sit on ... that's my excuse anyway!

Well done as always I see you must have got some time off for good behaviour.

the shelf unit was lightly sanded between the 3 coats of WOP and the inserts were made and fitted

each shelf insert is a shallow tray

which after being fitted to its opening, had the sides rebated to allow for the thickness of the suede

and, once the suede was attached, each insert was pushed in from underneath so as not to pull the suede off!

the desk has been used for a few weeks now

I'm sure there'll be some more changes to better handle the ratsnest of leads but, right at the moment, I'm pretty pleased with the result.

I've been using the computer desk for the last few months and, as predicted, the rats nest of leads IS driving me crazy but the first major change to the desk has been driven by hardware …. not rats!

WARNING, HISTORY CONTENT
In an earlier life, my father and I set about photographing every aircraft in Australia and the result of this delusion is an ENORMOUS library of negatives and slides that take up a large part of ONE of my studies. They were left to one of Australia's Aviation Museums but no museum these days wants 'hard' media and so they have politely declined the offer. I have now commenced scanning the 100,000+ images …….

My new film scanner didn't fit!

The solution was to make a withdrawable shelf that allows the scanner to fit under the shelf

it is made from a few pieces of ply, edging and 2 'push-to-open' drawer slides mounted flat between them

that allows the top surface to extend well beyond the base but remain secure and surprisingly steady

Yes, it's nice to get some shed time.
I've given up on my old(ish) Canon batch scanner. Getting SCSI to work on current computers became insurmountable. The Canoscan 9000F has a strip down the centre where you can scan to 9600dpi and, as Dad's negatives were cut into strips of 6, this allows me to batch scan the 6 …although it is slow!
One major plus however is that my Widelux panoramas, which are negatives or positives that are 24mm x 59mm, can now be scanned for the first time by laying them direct on the glass platen and sandwiching them with a piece of photographic glass on top.
I know that I will never scan the whole library and even doing the 'best 10%' will take more time than I can devote to it but ……....

You can do it when you retire from working life, on second thought that's what you did and still returned to work. Then how about doing 50 each week and if you have 100,000 I think it might take about 38years to complete.
