Default Will my table top warp ?

G'day woodworkers ! We were in need of a dinning table for our share house, not happy with the offerings at fantastic I had a go at making one .I only did some woodwork at school so it been a learning curve but enjoyable. Its made from 100 x 35mm recycled messmate glued without biscuits with 6mm welded steel hoop legs . Its not perfect and I was a little disappointed the Cabot's oil polyurethane turned the wood a slight orange tint.My fault for not testing it. My question is will the table top sag length wise with my steel legs and no long rails between them supporting the top ? The span between the legs is 1.5m . If so suggestions to prevent this . cheers Will.

    Hi Will,
I would be surprised if it didn't over time, a simple rail around the edge will add stiffness to the top 70-100mm on edge would be enough you could add a couple of intermediate ones across the width also for extra help to keep it flat.
    Regards Rod.

As Rod says it could sag over time. If you add a couple of rails longways between the leg sections that should keep things right. If they are set back from the edge a bit you will not see them so not change the overall look of the table.

Probably not, unless people take to sitting on the table.

35mm thick boards are pretty substantial

sagulator The Sagulator – WoodBin suggests a total sag of less than 1/2 mm

    Hi Will

    and welcome

I'm more worried about your top splitting with changes in humidity, than it sagging.
How did you attach it to the steel legs?
If screws, are the holes in the steel elongated so that the top can expand and contract across its width?

It's actually not screwed on yet . But yes I was planning on drilling 2 holes and grinding between to make slots .

Nice work on the table! Is it just me, but are the offerings at Fantastic and other places getting worse over the years?
