When you go to Bunnings (or Mitre 10 or Masters) you will often find that the timber is not properly stacked and then it's a bit warped, twisted or bowed. Do not be afraid of moving the timber around in their racks until you get good pieces that are straight and without bows and even ask the assistants to help you. I do.
You are paying good money for good timber so make sure you get it. A simple trick to check that it's good is to lay it down on the floor to check.

Just thought I'd update and say we picked up all the wood today. I found everything I needed in almost exact dimensions (only off by a couple mm). All up it cost $45! Awesome! The paint is going to cost just as much or more I think!
Now all we have to do is cut each piece into lengths and we're ready to go.
Thanks everyone for all your help! I'll update once it's all together!

Update!
I just wanted to come back and post with an update of the finished product.
Thank you again to everyone who offered advice and help! I'm so pleased with how this project turned out (despite the hassles)!
