Thinking maybe the guts of the pins piece has been cleared somehow so he can slide it in sideways someway.....or swivel it in. ??? ...unless he's fibbing about the split.
No doubt, one of you blokes have tried it already....wood borer maybe ?

Double Dovetail
I saw something similar a few years ago but have never had time to do it myself. It too looked impossible, I'll try and find photos of it. It was a dovetailed 90 degree angle but there were dovetails on BOTH faces, rather than dovetails on one face and pins on the other face.

I had a look at the links but couldn't find the dovetails I was talking about, there were however dovetails like the Leigh Isoloc dovetails but they were cut by hand.
Cheers

Jake
I will repeat to you the advice that I gave Wongo when he was torturing himself over how to make Sam Maloof's joints for a rocking chair - stop thinking about it, cut some wood and see how you go. It worked OK for him (as you would have seen if you have been following his WIP thread on the rocker: Wongo's rocker )and I am sure it will for you.Cheers
Jeremy
If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done quickly
