Thread: the impossible dovetail. ?
-
26th January 2007, 05:03 PM #121
Alright, I have figured it out
Lignum said the guy had given away a clue on ebay.
That clue is that it is in fact an impossible dovetail
ie, there is no way it can be done. The seller is very clever as he cannot get in trouble from ebay. He said he was selling an impossible dovetail and that is what he has done.
Anyone who says otherwise is leading you astray
Well done fellas
Cheers, Jack"There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

Some people seem to be thinking that bending the top piece is the way this is done. The attached diagram shows why this is impossible. Even bending the top piece, the shape of the 'pin' (in blue) does not clear the corner of the tail piece (in red).
keep thinking, guys! Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Jack i didnt say he gave away a clue, but the clue is in the photos.
And between the 122 replys to this thread and the 30 in Trippers "worked it out thread" i will say somewhere in those two threads their is "one small" mention of correct method (well corect for the way ive done it)

Go to Imageshack: -
http://load.imageshack.us/
Browse for the file on your PC and press the "Host It" button. Then you can either just send the url in your PM, or you can send the clickable thumbnail, or the entire image in a PM by pressing the "insert image" button: - , then just insert the url.
You don't have to open an account there, but it's free if you want to.
There's also photobucket, but you have to open a free account there. It's very handy for storing non-personal photos on line though.
With free hosting sites, you're not so restricted in image size and you don't have to attach your images at the bottom of your posts. You can put them anywhere you like, or hyperlink them to text if you want. Of course you could also store personal pics there in a private album if you wanted to, but I know people who have been embarrassed when their accounts have been hacked into.

Are you shore thats right though Zenwood ? .....When you flex it, it won't flex like a straight seesaw...There's a big banana like bend in it.
Meaning that 1:6 ratio or whatever, can be flexed square enough to clear that corner ......if its thin enough.
Pretty shore it work.....I think the reason it failed with me was because I hurried it......Should have cut the kerfs deeper

the diagram is correct, apricot. the combination of undercutting, plus having the centre of rotation anywhere other than at the extreme corner of the dovetail will result in an intererence between the two pieces.
All the pics of the completed joint show the clue to the true method. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

yeh,....your right.....I didn't think that the bend would probably reduce the distance accross the pins etc etc.....
