    Default Incra Quality Issues

    Hi WWF,

I just wanted to check in to see if anyone else has had quality issues with Incra product recently or if it is just my bad luck?

With my recent purchase the gold anodised surfaces were scratched, marked and discoloured. Certainly not even close to the quality standards I have come to expect
    from a premium brand.

While the unit is still perfectly functional it is disappointing to have a brand new tool look years old.

    Cheers
    Damien

I picked up a mitre express sled recently, quality & packaging was exceptional as expected, I've never had an issue with any of Incra gear I've purchased except for the price.

Where did you buy it? Could it be an ex-display or stock returned from a customer?

I bought a domino from carbatec a while back. It stayed in the box for a few weeks as I never had time to try it but when I finally picked it up saw dust came out of the machine and when I inspected closely the power button had finger grime on it. I suspect it was a display model, used for demonstration or a returned unit. I never bothered to speak to carbatec about it because it had been a few weeks (this is before I knew about festool's return policy - it was my first festool product) and that the machine essentially worked fine. I decided to buy from carbatec at the time to support them but needless to say every festool product I have bought since then has been from total tools.

Not having a dig at smaller shops, but I believe often these smaller shops keep very little stock and end up selling the display units customers before ordering in more. For a premium product with the price tag to match its not unreasonable to want something that is BRAND new.

I would rather not say where I purchased it from as I dont think it is their fault and they are trying to rectify the issue.

Will wait and see if I get any other responses from forum members before drawing a conclusion

Every single bit of Incra kit I've ever bought has been perfect out of the box, save for one tiny ding caused by UPS shipping the long TS-LS rails from the factory in the US to here.

All subsequent purchases have been perfect as well - I would say there's been either a manufacturing fault (which is surprising in itself, as I thought each item was QC checked off the line), or an error in a demo vs new unit, or return vs new unit was made at the retail end (and mistakes can happen).

    Hmmmm

    Anyone purchased anything recently?

I requested that the parts that were particularly marked to be replaced. The replacements were also sub standard…… so much so that I kept most of the original parts

The supplier has stated that Incra recently changed anodising companies

I purchased the mitre express on 29/04, all the anodised parts were perfect.

    My Incra dissatisfaction continues.

New Incra router plate arrived today and it had a nick out of it.

More concerning was that when I dropped it into the Incra table, the fit was so sloppy that the cam screw couldn’t actually engage.

I bought that a few years ago and I had to add shims to get the fence 90 deg to the sled surface. I would have expected that was done at the factory. So while Incra stuff is great I don't think their QC is perfect. Have a look at this video!

    Feedback from Incra as follows:

    Damien,

Thanks for your feedback. While we understand your concerns regarding the surface appearance, the fragile nature of this material make it virtually impossible to protect against all abrasions. The separate processes of extruding, deburring, machining and final anodizing allow for about a zillion opportunities for an item to take an abrasion. Believe it or not, aluminum dust it often the culprit and that dust in these processes is very difficult to avoid. Add to that the fact that our extruder discontinued the gold anodize that we have used for many years from their service offerings about 10 years ago (think of shower door surrounds from the 70s and 80s. It is just no longer popular). The gold anodize, once applied, hardens and protects the skin of the aluminum. Our extruder was able to anodize in 50’ lengths and then cut to length before sending to us to later deburr and machine. We now must carry the cut pieces through all of the processes without this initial protection. One side benefit to this new process is that the cut and machined ends are now anodized rather than aluminum colored as they were 10 years ago. Rest assured we are in constant search for improved methods for handling our material for better surface protections.

We are saddened that the parts that you received may lead to loosing you as a customer given the many years of service and high degree of accuracy that our tools have provided. No other fence systems or miter gauges on the market can offer the repeatability and unmatched accuracy and we work hard each day to keep our products affordable and at the leading edge of the industry.

    Thank you,

If the gold anodizing is no longer popular and they don't do enough to justify filling the big vat with gold dye then they should have just changed to one of the current popular colours, or changed anodizer.
