Default Info on bird feeders that will attract certain birds to my backyard in GlenIris 3146?

    Been searching for hours.

Is there more specific info on bird feeders that will attract certain birds to my backyard in Glen Iris 3146?

I really enjoyed designing and building a bird feeder.
    Regrettably it only attracts pigeons.
Pigeons just case other birds off.

I'm looking for specific info on bird feeders to attract birds other than pigeons.

Does anyone have more specific info on bird feeders and birds for my area in Glen Iris 3146?

    Thanks in advance.

Its largely a matter of approach and scale, Barry. Doves and pigeons are ground feeders and are relatively large birds. Use a feeder that requires them to sit on a perch to feed, then make the perch and feed hole small so that they are doubly discomforted. This might give you some ideas.

It takes a couple of weeks or a couple of months for the birds to work out what a feeder is for! Patience.

I made several audobon feeders from clear 65 mm tube and used them for years. Stopped using them when local cats decided it was a good ambush site.....

Also you can attract birds by planting the right plants for your area. You need plants that they can feed from, and also hide in. Google "bird gardening" for more ideas.

Overseas recommendations will not necessarily work as Australian birds like native plants but nectar feeders are attracted to some exotics such as fuscias.

An elderly aunt had a large dome made from chook netting on the ground which excluded large birds such as pigeons, doves, maggies, parrots. We were visiting one morning and she chucked a handful of bird food in and soon the little birds had hopped out of the surrounding garden and were hoeing in. From memory there was a bird bath in there as well. She said that once the larger birds realised they couldn't get in they didn't hang around.
    Cheers,
    Geoff.

You could try https://www.birdsinbackyards.net/ but I think the bird officianados frown on feeding - they have reasons if you want to know.

Also Australian birds are very different to North America and Europe. There should not be huger differences for most of south-eastern Aussie though. Where I am cockatoos are the problem. When they have eaten all the food they start on the house!

Some frown on feeding, but the evidence is that most birds won't come to rely on being fed. However, you may encourage too many unwanted birds, eg rainbow lorikeets and noisy miners in my area, at the expense of smaller birds. Also, if you feed, you must kep the feeder spotlessly clean. Wipe it over with vinegar every day. If there are lots of birds it's easy for diseases like psittacosis to spread like herpes round a ski lodge.
