internal door clearance (nooby question)
Hey guys,
Hope all is well. Sorry for this dumb question. Im attempting to replace my internal doors and was wondering how much smaller (width wise) the doors should be compared to the Jamb opening size? 6 or 7mm? I will be painting the doors afterwards so I thought this may have some bearing on the outcome. The jambs are already notched for the hinges so I will be doing the same on the new doors.
Any advice or help is greatly appreciated,
cheers guys,

p.s. what is the procedure when you have a jamb that is slightly out of square?
A couple of my jambs have an opening of 817mm at the top and 821mm at the bottom.
cheers again!
Have a good Easter guys!

You didn't mention height so I guess you have that figured, but make sure to think through what the thickness of the floor coverings is going to be.
I don't know what the professionals do, but if I were doing width I would choose the widest measure of the opening, fit the door and run a handplane over the edges that need to be reduced to make a nice easy fit, a gap of 2-3 mm at most in my opinion under the typical humidity and temperature conditions. I am keen to hear what some more experienced people will recommend.

Doors should have a margin of a 2" nail around the three sides, so overall you want 5 - 6mm. You need to fit the door to the opening by planing first before you hang it.

Thanks for the replies guys! awesome help!
I have another quick question. The doors I recently purchased from doors plus are the hollow core type, the salesman told me that both the left and right stiles can have handles fitted to them. At what height should the handles be set at? Im assuming that there is only a small section within the stile that accommodates for the handle, not all the way up and down the stile.
Thanks again!

lock blocks are centrally located, about 4-500mm long. (not sure exactly).
If you put your lock within 150mm of centre, you will be right.
