Internal Joinery Tamworth NSW
I'm looking for a Tamworth based company to re-vamp an old staircase. Any recommendations?
The job would involve
- Removal of the old rails, white 'decorative' metal, and carpet.
- New handrails on both sides.
- Modern child friendly standards - pickets/ballisters <125mm apart, rail 1m high etc. - matching gates top & bottom. Pickets could be simple rounded rectangles.
- Enclosure of the under the staircase as entry way cardboards appropriate for jackets, shoes, bags, etc. The doors frame & panel. Only a few drawers within if any.
The job should be fairly simple but I want it done to a high standard using appropriate timbers and traditional joinery. Depending on the evolving design some surfaces would be painted to match existing work.

OK
some questions for you
do you want newell posts top and bottom or only at the bottom?
what profile do you want for the handrail? Traditional? plain round? a 3rd option?
what wood was used for the original stairs?
do the gates need to be permanent? i.e are you expecting to have little grandkids visiting for the next 10 years? or only temporary
It's very hard to tell from here, but my starting point would be that the upgrade you're looking for may require building a whole new set of stairsregards from Alberta, Canada

A whole new set of stairs? Why? He only wants new handrails and a couple of gates. You blokes will have him tearing the house down next.

in which case I'd advise deleting the gates from the design brief.
By the time the stair case is remodelled, the kids wioll be old enough to use teh stairs by themselves. We found we didn't need gates protecting the stairs after our kid was about 3½. He just needed to be supervised till he had taught himself to use the stairs.regards from Alberta, Canada

Dan
My son, who is a carpenter, has recently moved to Tamworth. Although this may not be something in his line he may have some contacts via the two builders he will be working for. He is up here with us for a couple of days but I won't get to talk to him until tomorrow night. When I do I will send you a PM.

Hi Rusty,
but Dan did request
I want it done to a high standard using appropriate timbers and traditional joinery
The outside stringer on my stairs is capped with a 2-1/2 x 3/8 inch flat strip to which the 2" square, turned ballisters are attached -- from the photo it looks as though the existing stringer has a curved top profile
IMO ballisters thin enough to go on the existing stringer will look very spinderly
to modify the existing stairs would likely involve lots of fidderly onsite work
New stairs could be made in a factory and possibly installed in one day -- less labour = lower costregards from Alberta, Canada

Thanks for the feedback fellas. Enlightening... and entertaining. Like the beginning of any design project each question leads to another detail. I'll post a few ideas as a brainstorming activity. Feel free to comment.
Square newel posts top and bottom do give formality to the structure.
Lots of options. Perhaps some simple fluting.
So many options... Something like#78.
The fates will most likely permanent. The lay out of the house lends itself to be a family home and I think most people appreciate the safety factor.
Not sure of the timber under the carpet... only one way to find out.
A complete remodel might not be a bad idea. As the only stair case to the upper level it can't be out of action for very long. There is some simplicity to having an entire new staircase built.
I'll keep thinking about it all.My blog: ~ for the love of wood ~ - http://theloveofwood.blogspot.com/

Couldnt get the photos up the other day. Have now had a look and the job looks easier than I first thought. Grooved cap on the stringer, newells top and bottom scarfed over existing stringer, grooved handrail cut to fit, clamp precut ballisters to newel posts to receive handrail, fix handrail to newells fit ballisters into groove in both bottom cap rail and handrail, spacer blocks in groove between each ballister in both handrail and bottom rail. these blocks should be single tacked only to allow for easy removal for repairs.
Job done. Where's the fridge?
