Seeing the yosegi zaiku in Hakone would be definitely on my agenda.

You asked the perfect question, for I'm also considering a trip there for a while. I have a few places I can stay (friends) so its been pressing on me before I'm too old!

    Yes, Hakone's the place.
Take the train from Tokyo to the Picasso Museum (outdoor art gallery) and spend the morning there, then go to the several nearby galleries. One is at 180 Hatajuku, Ashigarashimo-gun, Hakone-machi 250, Kanegawa Prefecture, and there are others nearby. If I recall correctly, you can walk between the two, then get a cablecar down to Hakone proper (but age may have dimmed my memory).

Also, if you get the chance, visit the blade shop in Kawagoe, north of Tokyo. Can't remember the name, but it's in the main street.

Hi Tom, sounds like you are following in the footsteps of the now sadly deceased Alan Peters who was a legendary English furniture maker. He visited Japan , I think it was in the 1970's.
He was obviously very inspired and influenced by their work as is evident in many of his pieces.

I was living and working in Devon (running a tea shop) while his workshop was still going but sadly never got to visit or meet him.I found this link from a Japanese site you may like to look at.

I am sure you sure you will have a great trip, would love to visit myself someday.
