    Default Japanese planing technique

I just watched Foreign Correspondent on the ABC and they had a segment on the Kyodo (I think that's the spelling) drummers who play those enormous drums that you see sometimes on TV and the movies.
The first task of the first year students (it takes 2 years) is to make their own drum sticks.
The interesting thing was to watch their planing method in which they pull the plane towards them rather than push away like I think most westerners do. I might try this myself next time

A recent samurai movie called "The Blind Swordsman Zatoichi" has a scene where carpenters are building a house: planes are pulled, saws are pulled, all to the beat of foot-tapping music. Recommended viewing.

Japanese planes are designed to be pulled. Western ones are designed to be pushed. But sometimes I still pull my (western) planes. Just takes practice.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

I will second that, the pull technique works with the mujis extremely well, especially those with the cross handle. It also seems much less effort compared to pushing the plane. I tried it forr the first time last week but I think I will try to adopt it for good.
You can never have enough planes, that is why Mr Stanley invented the 1/2s

The HNT Gordon web site shows photos of how to use their planes backwards too.
