Thread: Jet JOVS-10 Sander - Problems and Cure.

I had a visit from member, Elanjacobs and while he was in my shed he saw my Jet JOVS-10 spindle sander and asked if I had any problems changing the sanding sleeves. I hadn't previously and when I went to show him, I couldn't budge any of the sleeves. He said he had to put the spindles in the freezer to get sleeves off. I thought that strange so sent off an email to Jet. Their response, put the spindles in the freezer to get them off.

While I was fiddling with the sander I noticed oil on the floor. A slight leak I thought. I opened up the back door of the sander and there was oil everywhere. A major leak. All through the electric motor, wiring and inside the cabinet. I sent off an email to Jet, asking if they had had any info on oil leaks on this machine. I was thinking O rings or gaskets. The Technical dept sent back, check the oil sight glass. I did and it just fell out without even trying. The silicone sealant that Jet had used in manufacture had reacted to the gear oil, softened and created the leak. After cleaning up all the mess I purchased a tube of Permatec Number 1 sealant from Supercheap. It is for sealing hard plastic and metal . Cleaned the hole and the three parts of the sight glass (plastic) with turps. Refitted and two litres of SEA 90 gear oil also from Supercheap and the machine is right to go. I gave it a long run and a sit over night and all is clean and dry. There are many types of silicone sealant and if you use the wrong type on the wrong materials it could spell disaster. Some sealants do not stick to plastic, some cause plastic to craze and crack. Some do not tolerate oil so you have to choose carefully.
