not sure if this is the right forum to ask, but how do I join say 2 * 18mm mdf sheets to become 1 * 36mm sheet?I want to make the strongest join as it will be a 36mm panel for a cabinet I'm making.

PVA glue(selleys aquadere), grab a 6" paint roller and tray put about 300ml of pva glue in the tray and roll it on generously on 1 sheet. Lay the other sheet on top and weight it down evenly as possible... bags of sand or piles of magazines/books work well.
You will need a flat surface because once glued it will stay near that shape! It may be better to cut it up into your panel sizes to start with then laminate them together.
It is possible to get 32mm mdf, its used for kitchen bench tops.
What sort of cabinet are you making, there's only one type of cabinet that needs 36mm+ mdf making a sub box are we?....................................................................

G'day,
I've used contact cement a few times, to laminate MDF. The good thing about contact cement is, a high percentage of the hold comes with first contact. This helps because you dont really need to clamp/hold them together. I just put them together, made sure there was no trapped air between them, and left them to dry
If you go the PVA route, cauls are a good way of holding them together with even pressure.
Cheers.

You can also get MDF glue which seeing as you are joining MDF would be a pretty sure thing.
Probably just PVA with a different label though

you should be able to get 32mm mdf from any commercial board supplier.
Make friends with you locak supplier of small cabinet shops.
You will save quite a lot and get better product choice.
Laminating up hole sheets of board is a pain and completely unnecessary.
cheersAny thing with sharp teeth eats meat.
Most powertools have sharp teeth.
People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.

When you make your box, make it from 18mm to start with and when you complete it... glue on another layer of mdf much much easier.
If done correctly the joints will be stronger than using a single sheet of 36mm, what you do is overlay the outer layer so it covers the "end grain" of the sheet underneath that meets it at 90°. It increases the glue surface by 18mm and adds a few angles to increase mechanical shear strength.
