what joint?
I'm building a balustrade gate (hardwood breadloaf, midrail, bottom rail and cricket-stump dowelled) and in a bit of a quandry about what joint to use to join the breadloaf to the stiles. If I use a M/(round)T the mortice in the breadloaf will be 29mm from the end of the rail and I wonder whether this is too close given that the racking force might pop the end grain of the rail out. This is my preferred joint, but I could do a (blind)bridle joint or a twin bridle joint to maximize surface area. Any thoughts?
Cheers

oops I have to correct myself, the mortice would be only 16mm from the end of the rail.

Have you got a Pic of your project plan? always helps a neanderthal like me to see whats going on!.............seriously though going with your idea of mortise and (Round?) tenons should be fine particularly considering you'll be using a Hardwood (Although I doubt their'd be problems with a softwood to). ................ 16mm from the end of the rail is pleanty...............If you glueup right you'll find she'll hold together no problems.

No pic sorry. Because the rail is spotted gum and hard as buggery, I'm just drillig a 1" hole as the mortice and rounding off a 1" square tenon to fit. Beats squaring up the hole!
