    Post Jointer newbie question

    howdy y'all

First time user of a combination jointer/thicknesser. I've been planning 230mm by 3000mm blackbutt planks. I forgot to request straigh cut from the guy who milled the tree. He seems to specialise in crinkles cut. So I've had to remove approxiatmately 10mm each board to get them flat and parallel.

After a couple of days use the thickness auto feed has stopped. I can feel roller tensions on the boards and they will feed though (and cut) if I push them. But they ain't feeding automatically.

Is this a dirty/coated roller issue or blunt blades?

The machine in question is a Carbatec 10" Combination Thicknesser Jointer (TJX250P) paired with a 2HP Carbatec Dust Extractor (DC-1200P).

Try cleaning the rollers and also the feed table. Lubricate the bed with candle wax, or with a light lanolin spray. (Wipe off afterwards.) Often, a sticky film forms on the table & needs to be removed.

Wax the table. Candle or paraffin wax. Do not use silicone, it will penetrate the timber and give problems when polishing.

Kindly excuse my ignorance, but what is "crinkles cut"? Perhaps a photo.

Also, what type of timber are you dressing and how green or dry is it?

Cleaning and waxing of the beds is very important. Another product not yet mentioned is Silver Glide (silber gleit) which you can get from CarbaTec or Felder. I use it over wax on my beds and probably redo it after a long session. Maybe two or three times per cubic metre of wood.

Run a short piece of pine through that is dead flat. If the feed mechanism doesn't pull the board through you've broken something or if belt drive a pully has come loose. If it pulls it through will lots of power then your blackbutt planks are probably curved and not riding on the bottom rollers. Doesn't matter how strong your planer is if the wood doesn't ride on the bottom rollers, the wood will jamb up.

Did you follow the instructions and engage and disengage the roller mechanism when you switched between jointer and thicknesser?

Check to see the rollers are actually turning — be careful of course, but you should be able to see from the end whether they are turning. If not, the belt that drives them has probably slipped off its pulley. Also 3m is a pretty long plank to put through that machine. It may be tilting a bit from unsupported weight at the end?
