Default Jointer/planer and thicknesser of combination for beginner

    Hi all

Relatively new beginner to woodworking and it seems a barrier to really getting into it would be access to dressed timber. As such, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of any reliable and well performing jointers(or combination jointer thicknessers) that won't break the bank.

    Thanks in advance

    Dan

Carbatec 10" Combination Planer Thicknesser with Helical Cutterhead | Carbatec

I bought one of these as a stop gap machine on a large project and have it on site, I’ve been mightily impressed with it. There’s a cheaper one with straight knives too but this one is far better. You’ll need a 2 hp dust extractor to go with it. It would be a perfect start up machine. Good luck.

Agreed, I have one as well and it is a good unit that works on a standard 10a plug. I did have one issue that needed rectifying and that was the fence, or should I say the bolts holding it, in that they were already stripped when I got the unit and so the fence had a pronounced wobble. Upon investigation the bolts turned out to be M6 threads only about 12-15mm long, and after recutting the hole and substituting some M6 threads that were about 25mm long it's all good, so apart from that relatively minor issue I have only praise for it. If it makes any difference it's my first planer/thicknesser too, so it can't be too hard for a newbie to figure out as long as you have a modicum of mechanical know how.

Gregory Machinery have a Woodman model that is similar to the Carbatec ones mentioned above. Might be worthwhile to check out as a comparison - dealres might be willing to do deals right now!

Also the Hafco one W611 - PT-254S Planer & Thicknesser Combination - Spiral Cutter Head | Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse
Looks like more robust ribbing on the table castings and the roller on the back of the thicknesser table is nice too. The dust hood is also more suitable for opening out to take a 6" hose

Agreed, and it’s also 3hp, the carbatec one is only 1.5hp, mine struggles sometimes. I’ve never had an issue with the 100mm dust ports though, I think mainly because the helical head produces much much smaller chips which are easier to shift through the line.

Thanks everyone for your tips. With this hafco one, has anyone used one before. Can't find too much in the way of reviews on it.

I think you'll find it's the same as this unit from Axminster in the UK Axminster Trade AT260SPT Spiral Planer Thicknesser - Planer Thicknessers - Planers & Thicknessers - Machinery | Axminster Tools & Machinery

There are numerous videos on youtube about this unit, unboxing, setup, calibration etc. Time you grab a beer or coffee and watch a few I'd suggest.
