Jointers?
With the Melbourne Working with Wood show coming up and the good chance of a bargin, what are your thoughts on a good but under $1000 jointer?
What should I look for in order to do the job well? Have been looking at the Carb-a-tec and Timecon models.
Value experience rather than stuffing up myself....
I have a 12" thicknesser so do not need a combo.
Thanks in anticipation.....

If you have the room, buy an 8" model. A Powermatic if you can extend the budget.
If you're pressed for space then get a Jet 6"

Like the idea of a nice stight edge as well so may look at the longer beds. Most of my work will get buy with a 6" but as you say size does count.....
Thanks

6in Deluxe Jointer - WJ-150-Q Timbecon $599
6in Jointer - TBJ-6-C Timbecon $469
Either of these have any bad flaws?

The Carbatec 6" long bed model is what I would go for.
I have the 8" equivalent. The paralellogram system works well.
Has a large footprint base which is very stable. Good solid accurate fence.

Bennylaird, I bought a Carba-Tec 6" about a month ago. I am very, very happy with it. This review (of the Delta 37-195)persuaded me....

That Woodfast unit on Ebay is a great old machine and even in fair condition new blades and perhaps some bearing replacement would cost relatively little if you are adept in that area. If it was in Brisbane I'd be bidding
As for the others you mention well I'd bet the Woodfast will still be running when they aren't.Perhaps it is better to be irresponsible and right, than to be responsible and wrong.

Checking out the Carba-Tec now. Is the Swan Street store still open?

Regardless of which brand you go for get 8". I went 6" thinking that was all I needed but my rough sawn stock comes anything up to 170mm wide and i have to hand plane the excess ridge after every pass over the jointer.
