    Default Best joints to use.

    G,day all,
I am building an undercover, freestanding, bbq area (7m x 5m).
The basic frame is 150mm hardwood with 6 posts and top plate.
What would be the best joining method (posts to top plate) keeping in mind that I want the plates to sit directly on top of the posts.
The timber that I am using is very old, very hard, and fairly straight.
    All suggestions would be welcome
    Slim

I'm no joint expert, but I would use either big dovetails to stop them pulling apart, or lap joints secured by a dowel.

    Default Joints

    Greetings,
I am sure that there are in the range of joist hangers and such some metal fixing plates that would suit the job and bolt or screw them together. Galvanised plates and screws or bolts even if it is undercover.

I think one of the ways would you could do it would be to attach two t shape straps with through cup head bolts but the easiest joint would be a lap joint so the bearer or top plate is bolted through the face of the post !

    Thanks for the replies!
I have drawn the partial frame showing the joints that I have made.
I drew it in Sketch Up and hopefully it will attach ok!
