Thread: What joints should I use ?

Yeah you were right actually, this retirement lark is good.

I have attached the pieces of oak across the frame as per pic attached and now preparing the wings and pivoting system.

Wings now finished but not as yet fitted to main frame, as per pic attached.

I am now thinking about the 3 pieces for table tops. I am going to resaw some 6x2" softwood S/H roof timbers. ( I have the some teak but consider it most probably to heavy for the softwood frame)
Would members with their experience tell me how to joint the top as per drawing attached.

I have a router table and 2 straight cutters 10mm & 12.5mm, also the triton workscentre.

Work has come to a stop again on table, we had breakfast in the garden this morning , the first time in our lives in England, we poured the butter on instead of spreading . Temp reads over 70o far in workshop at 7.30am. WEather dropping 20ofar. in a couple of days with a northerly wind due, should be back to work.

Just to put this in perspective for those BB members not familiar with the geography of the Old Dart: Paignton, where jow104 lives, is a very pleasant spot on the South-West coast. It's a holiday resort town at this time of year.

30 years ago, my life's partner and I, together with some friends, spent 2 weeks there on holiday. Day One: absolutely magnificent - the same sort of weather that jow104 has been describing. Ice creams all round, get the bathers out boys and girls, it's gonna be a cracker!

That was Day One. Days Two to Fourteen: non-stop bloody drizzle; sky approximately 8 feet 6 inches above mean sea level, cold enough for long red itchy winter underwear. Thankfully, the town is well furnished with good pubs and pub grub. The holiday passed in a mild alcoholic haze. (That Devonshire scrumpy knocks you about something strange: as long as you're sitting down, no drama. As soon as you try to walk you discover that you're paralysed from the knees down. Trips to the Gents become a bit of an adventure). Happy Days!

If you ask me (which you didnt) I'd say that 14 days of 35C+ temperatures which we experience in Perth is just as bad Driver.

At least in drizzly weather you can sleep comfortably

Wasn't that the day when our mates from Western Power let us down? Just to make you feel better, I was in Margaret River that day, driving from winery to winery in air-conditioned comfort.

Yep that was the day.

IT was quite ridiculous really, everybody complaining and cryign because the power company couldn't cope.

Frankly, If they were spending my taxpayers money on power infrastructure that would only be fully utilised once every few decades, I'd be furious.
Better to be without power due to an overload than have are system which is running at 30% capacity fro most of the time.

That kind of thing never happens in Paignton, does it jow? . . . . Jow?

Regret no work done yesterday, but my neighbour who had been on holiday in italy came in at 10am and rewared me with a bottle of the local brew for my services to his garden whilst they were away.
At 3pm I opened the bottle and did not rise from the bench outside my workshop until 7.30pm.

If any retired australian couple would like to visit England they are welcome to stay at our humble abode (no charges) .
I am attaching two pics of accommodation that would be given and they would most probably find it most comfortable during July and August, September would most probably be turning colder for aussies.
We ourselves stayed with Vince an June Cohen during our visit to Australia in January this year, so give them a ring if you wish to obtain any info of our way of life. Motor car would not be required if travelling in the vicinity.

From the photo of you and your neighbour's gift, I think you are in grave danger of overexercising! Try not to overdo it!

Where's my cardigan (below 70 today), but last night I built a platform for my new pull mitre saw, needed to accurately cut the table top pieces.
I have placed three 1/4" brass rods into a fixed foundation piece, put an aluminium strip on the platform (mdf door from skip with the cardboard type internal support, very lightweight) to maintain platform position. A strip of 40mm ply (skip again) to use as the fence, glued and screwed .
I have around 75ft of 8x2" , so going to select the most suitable bits to create 9 lenghts of 5x1" and also additional pieces for the end caps of table top.
It's a good job it's cooler today the 8x2 is at the bottom of the pile.
