Well... ahem not EXACTLY woodwork but DEFINATLY related

See Ive had some REAL issues doing any woodwork over the last 8 months seem to have lost motivation inspiration and inclination to do anything other than metal work in there... and I ONLY EVER do metal work when I absolutely have nothing better to do in other words RARELY

Sooo today I went out there and as usual started dithering around doing nothing just standing against the bench looking down at the creek... half an hour later I thought stuff this caper!! and went back down to the house and figetted muckin about with this and that cleanin this cleaning that felt like a right Sadie the cleaning lady and all the while the sheds totally neglected... so I was in the bedroom makin the bed finally... been awhile... when I spotted the ipod in its dock that I take to work in the truck... mmmmmmm

So I forgot the bed... again... and took the ipod out to the shed set it up in its wee dock thing on the workbench and kicked it in the guts!... quick shuffle through the humungous list of songs finally old George Througood was screamin "GET A HAIRCUT AND GET A REAL JOB" at me and Im feelin me feets startin to twitch... changed songs aaahhhh Barnsy!! "Workin Class Man" roarin as only Jimmy can and

IM OFF!!! dancin around me shed singin at the top of me voice smile a mile wide on my dial... WHAHOOOOOOOOOOO!!

So I reach up and get down first one pile of veneers then the next then the extra long ones and I start sorting through counting measuring sorting then writing all the info down... then reset them up in their hidey hole... to the strains of Van Morrison "Dark side of the road" boppin around I sorted through the draws on the lathe bench going through the stack of pen blanks then through the pen kits light kits clock kits sorting into some form of order... put that back to the sounds of Van Morrisons "Domino" and spotted the old Sheoak mantle clock that was tucked in a corner for repairs and thought stuff this DOMINO IT!!... so I ripped the clock parts out and installed new ones stuck a new battery in and away it went!!... with me hips sashayin to Elvis "Im nothin but a hounddog" I grabbed some Jarrah and started planing (Derek mate no sniggling there old boy! Your the ONLY one that knows the horrendous extent of my one planeitis!) since I sorta lost track of my previously owned jointer it had to be done and done it was after several LONG HOURS with a block plane

(I told you my planeitis extends to just one hand plane

)

Then I put that aside to the sounds of Jerry Lee Lewis "Great Balls of Fire" and started the lathe up and turned some Jarrah whatevers that ended up being a couple of belaying pins!... then a quick grab at some of Joshys previously readied pen blanks and whacko I turned out two gorgeous pens!!

So Ive ended up with a tally count of the veneers (something I should have done awhile back) one nice smooth sided peice of Jarrah, a working mantle clock, two belaying pins and a couple of nice pens!!!

IM BACK!!!!

WHAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

God that felt SO FRIGGIN GOOD!!!

Yous mob have no idea how bad that severe case of shed/woodworking guilt was

ahem... sorry bout that but I just had to tell someone!!! No-one here but me (Josh went back to his mother early

) and I needed to YELL IT!!!

Shane,

I dont know you, but I have read all your many soulful posts and have searched for something helpful to say.
Not much came, that I thought would be of any great help.
So I took my old man's advice which was that if you have nothing helpful to say, then shut up.
I have one colleague, who once gave me a saying which has helped me to overcome tough times, but it only means something when you have started on the long road back. Before that it sounds like psychological humbug.

Congratulations on your latest post.
It is uplifting and tremendous news and it indicates that you are on the way back.

The saying which may have some meainng now is:

" No matter what circumstances life throws at you, how you feel is a choice you make" Your reactions and emotions are not imposed. They are your choices to make."

It is fantastic to see you making some great choices and getting some meaningful results.

60's rock is a great first choice and doing something real is a superb next choice.
I cant wait to read about your upcoming choices.

Waterfall Bubinga... 6 x 21in x 12in... 8 x 28in x 12in... 8 x 3ft 4in x 12in (cupboard door faces)

Birdseye Maple... 7 x 9ft x 10 1/2in... 3 x 10ft x 12 1/2in (bedroom furnishings facings)

Ebony... 5 x 5ft 7in x 10in (unknown as yet)

Hickory... 5 x 5ft 6in x 8 3/4in (again unknown as yet)

Olive Crotch... 7 x 32in x 9in > 6in (tapered) (table top marquetry)

Redwood... 13 x 2ft x 8 3/4in > 7in (tapered) (table top marquetry)

Santos Rosewood... 3 x 14ft x 23in > 18in (taper at one end) (THIS IS SPECIAL and I need to consider long and hard what to use it for sooo stunning its near blinding)

Black Walnut crotch... 12 x 19in x 12in (more insert marquetry somewhere)

Black Walnut... 10 x 26in x 23in > 21in (tapered)... 3 x 9ft x 13in (cupboard door facings or some such)

As I said this will increase over the next couple of months in the Birdseye Maple and Rosewood in particular along with a couple of other crotch ones

Ive completed the restoration of the Sheoak mantle clock that I made about 5 years back between trips to the hospital to visit the newest grandie... and cut and readied 12 13in 1x1 old curly Jarrah for ships wheel spokes... and I almost got the old table saw ready to use just cant find the friggin flat head bolts to bolt the flamin front angle to the table with... flamin sheds a total retarded mess just now gotta fix that!!... also got some old Jarrah pergola timbers readied for stripping back and ripping to size... AND I fixed the damned chainsaw!! WHAHOOO no more cold nights for me now by gar!

Ooooh and I havent yet managed to find the damned whippersnipper its hiding out there somewhere... anyone know anyone that has a slasher and rotary hoe they can let me use for a weekend? Actually I would gladly pay someone to do it!!! damn that scares the blazes outta me just looking at it!!... gotta get it done before summer comes otherwise so will the joe blakes!

Shane- that's Huge !

Good on you mate. I'm also glad to see that you kept a lot of the wonderful veneers back at home when you came to Derek's. Cheers for the ones you brought but make something beautiful with the ones you kept.

It's sad when an obsession loses its bright shiny feel, but rediscovering the feeling is wonderful (full of wonder).
