50th birthday present, Trio of tricks
A friend was admiring a cheese board I'd made and had put in a "I'll have one of those" requests in passing. So a few weeks later we received an invite to her 50th. There was no doubts as to what to get, and it was timber to make her something. She loved the Purple Heart stringer I put in ours but I didn't have any left and I couldn't get hold of any quickly so I opted for a hugely contrasting Walnut/silver ash combo. And here is the result.
i made the board, then used the offcuts to make an antique grinder, then had off cuts from that so made a bottle opener as the final piece.

Great work. I love the look of them.
When you say Walnut do you mean American Walnut?
Where did you obtain it? I'm not in Sydney but I'm curious about timber that contrasts nicely with Silver Ash.

Beautiful, Fumbler.
That's inspired me for Christmas. Fairly simple project (actually I have no idea how difficult it is to make a grinder) but it would be a special gift that will be used for years.
Btw, What oil did you use?

The grinder is one of the easy ones, just bore a hole, turn the outside, flare out the base, done.
Liquid paraffin. pour on, leave sit for an hour, wipe off excess, if end grain it will absorb more so pour more on if dried in places. This time however, even though I went through the motions, 120/240/400 and as smooth as a baby badgers bum, the oil lifted an edge, but a quick sand (mind you the oil was applied a week ago) then re-oiled, and she's apples.

"Just bore a hole, turn the outside, flare out the base, done" ... Right I've never even used a lathe
