    Default Kauri Pine weatherboards

    Hi Guys

I have stripped an exterior wall of just under 150 linear metres of old 23mm Kauri pine weatherboards and am thinking of building a dining table out of some of them. They are all coated in a very thick lead paint and I have a couple of questions:

    - what do I need to do to turn the boards into usable timber. Am I best taking them somewhere to be thicknessed?

    - Since they have been coated with lead for maybe a hundred years would they be contaminated even after the paint has been removed such that they should not be used for a dining table?

    Thanks for your advice.

    Tim

You can do a quick google search to see if anyone in Sydney specialises in removing lead paint but before you do that you might klike to pick up a lead testing kit from Master Painters Association - Lead Paint Test Kits to confirm that it is lead based paint.
    I make sawdust with powertools.

    Welcome aboard.

It is an interesting question, isn't it?

Could you strip a test piece and get it checked for lead?
We don't know how lucky we are......

No question about it the paint is definately lead it is so thick... and the primer is reddish which i think may be lead based also. I haven't done a test but others who have looked at it and know more than me have also confirmed it is definately lead-based.

The recommendation to strip the paint and use a lead test kit is a good one thanks Seannz. I will plane it a bit first to get an idea of if the lead has penetrated the board and will also test for lead on the unpainted side.

Does anyone know if I can take boards somewhere to have them cleaned up/thicknessed in or close to Sydney?

    Thanks

For 150m you would be better off buying a thicknesser and doing it yourself.
