Default kiddies custom rifle stock

duno if you guys are into this stuff but i will post up the project i worked on last week:

I have a zastava cz99 .22 that my 8yo uses at the junior bench rest comp, on a Sunday.
I set it up with the 8 to 32 Bushnell scope but I only have high mounts, ad that to the fact that the stock is too long and the comb is way too low she ended up using the bottom of her chin and opening her mouth to get a sight picture. :ummmno:
Something needed to be done.
I glued up some marine ply sheets into a sandwich to about 63mm thick.

We discussed what style she wanted and came up with a skeleton thumbhole with a raised cheek piece and step down beavertail style fore end.
[/img]
I rough shaped and inlet as we had discussed and the set out to hollow out the butt, I moved the thumbhole WAY forward so it is not such a stretch to reach the trigger. Also I raised the cheek piece and set the LOP to 10 inches. I then thinned out the wood so it weighs about the same as 2 or 3 tissues.

A happy little lady.

Still yet to bed the action and then finish it, i think i will use tru oil on it as the laminate looks quite nice, i think.

i have just come back in from bedding the action into the stock.
i decided because the zastava action has only the one action screw i would bed the whole action and barrel channel, but after looking at it i realised that i would be messing with fate.
the reciever has a dove tail join that i would risk devcon entering then making a mechanical lock that would ruin the stock and mabey the action if it were to be glued together.
instead i decided to bed the barrel and just the rear of the action. this will give me the stability i need but wont risk a glue in.

i will pop it out tonite and let the devcon go rite off over nite, sanding and truoil to start tomorrow. :boogie:

got boored and so i sanded the bedding back to flush with the stock last nite, so with nothing better to do i rubbed a good coat of truoil into the stock with steel wool.
a quick rub back this morning and it up to its third coat of truoil now :P

pester power wins, i had to assemble the rifle with only 4 coats of truoil, because we had to see how it shoots. :

test shooting.

she had to compete against her sister who already has her custom savage .22.

a short vid of her in action

The laminate pattern looks great. I was initially concerned the stock was too thin to absorb the recoil and was worried about splintering, but on second thoughts, a .22 doesn't have any recoil! Good job! And the cutie with the gorgeous smile looks very happy with it too.

yea theres no way i would make it so thin on a centerfire, but a big part of the motivation was it being easy for a little person to handle so as you say the smiles speak for themselves

Greg,
It's great to see you teaching your girls responsible fire arms use and handling ,shooting is a great sport , too bad its not supported more ,by schools and Govt .
Stocks look great ,and a great idea too , rather than modify the original wood. As the girls out grow the stocks new ones can be made until the original stock fits them properly.
Great idea.
